Encounters: Jewellery, 1997–2003 is a catalog for an exhibition by the same name at the Electrum Gallery, London. The exhibition featured mostly works from 2003 with a few pieces from the 1970s and 1980s.
David Watkins (1940– ) is considered a leading jeweler of his generation. He received a BA in fine art from Reading University where he studied sculpture. He attributes his transition from large-scale sculpture to jewelry to his wife and jewelry maker, Wendy Ramshaw. In the 1970s, Watkins was one of the first jewelers to experiment with computer-aided design (CAD) and is known for his experimentation with materials and precision with forms. From 1984–2007 he was the Professor of Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery at the Royal College of Art, London. During that time he was a model maker for the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. More recently, Watkins designed the award medals for the 2012 London Olympics.
