This increase is also a concern for future drinking water salt levels.\u00a0 One stream immediately downstream of a large mall parking lot is seeing conductivity levels near sea water. All three of these streams are in highly urbanized areas, but the proximity to the parking lot and the large size made this stream the saltiest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/Shoemaker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1436\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/Shoemaker-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/Shoemaker-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/Shoemaker.jpg 606w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even between salting events, the conductivity is higher than last year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/RMR.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-1435\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/RMR-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/RMR-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/RMR.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I thought I would try looking for salt storage adjacent to streams or parking lots using and electomagnetic profiler, working with undergraduate assistant Lucas Oberholtzer-Hess. However, we found significant urban interference with the signals and no clear salt storage signal in the two sites we surveyed. Cars in parking lots are an example interference.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/lucas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1438\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/lucas-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/lucas-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geotoran\/files\/2025\/03\/lucas.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Undergraduate assistant Katie Alexandrenko finished analyzing the samples the watersheds have been collecting for the past 10 years, with one last round this winter.\u00a0 We saw higher salt concentrations than any other year!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s nice to see the end of the winter (and digging loggers out of the ice to download data).
