When the new GenEd was launched, I\u00a0 designed and taught the class <a href=\"\/\/news.temple.edu\/nutshell\/2017-10-20\/cool-classes-spring-2018\">Disasters: Geology vs. Hollywood<\/a>, where students learn about earthquakes, volcanoes and other geologic catastrophes while having fun critiquing the science in Hollywood disaster movies.<\/p>\n<p>So it was doubly appropriate when GenEd, through the efforts of IH associate director <a href=\"https:\/\/liberalarts.temple.edu\/academics\/faculty\/greenfield-douglas\">Doug Greenfield<\/a>, hosted two screenings of the disaster movie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0298814\/\">The Core<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentcenter.temple.edu\/reel-cinema\">Reel Cinema<\/a> in Temple&#8217;s student union. For those not familiar with the movie&#8217;s premise, a U.S. military weapons program designed to induce targeted earthquakes has somehow stopped the spinning of our planet&#8217;s core, causing the collapse of the Earth&#8217;s magnetic field. Mayhem ensues, including super-storms that destroy the Roman Colosseum, microwave radiation\u00a0 that melts the San Francisco Bay Bridge, and pigeons to run amok in Trafalgar Square. Our only hope? Jump-start the core by sending an intrepid band of &#8220;terranauts&#8221; armed with nuclear weapons to the center of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p>An Earth and Environmental Science graduate student, <a href=\"https:\/\/jamesberglund.weebly.com\/\">Jim Berlund<\/a>, and I provided snarky commentary throughout the film. Free candy and popcorn for all!<\/p>\n<p>The irony?<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/does-an-anomaly-in-the-earths-magnetic-field-portend-a-coming-pole-reversal-47528\">latest research<\/a> shows that<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;the strength of Earth\u2019s magnetic field has been decreasing for the last 160 years at an alarming rate. This collapse is centered in a huge expanse of the Southern Hemisphere, extending from Zimbabwe to Chile, known as the South Atlantic Anomaly. The magnetic field strength is so weak there that it\u2019s a hazard for satellites that orbit above the region \u2013 the field no longer protects them from <a href=\"http:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/new-hubblecast-video-explores-south-atlantic-anomaly\/\">radiation which interferes<\/a> with satellite electronics.<\/p>\n<p>And the field is continuing to grow weaker, potentially portending even more dramatic events, including a global reversal of the magnetic poles. Such a major change would affect our navigation systems, as well as the transmission of electricity. The spectacle of the northern lights might appear at different latitudes.
