Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Dakota_oil_boom\">Bakkan Oil\u00a0<\/a><br \/>\nBoom has slowed with falling oil prices, oil derricks have become a ubiquitous feature of a\u00a0landscape that used to be all cattle, wheat fields and dusty dirt roads. \u00a0I have mixed feelings. The oil money is a welcome boost to the struggling local economy, and the 3D <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aiche.org\/chenected\/2012\/06\/real-time-monitoring-frackings-newest-revolution\">seismic monitoring used to guide fracking\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0is an outstanding example of cutting-edge geophysics in action. \u00a0Concerns about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/research\/induced\/\">induced seismicity<\/a> are minor in this region where the population density is so low, but worry over \u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/bk-2015-1216.ch007\">long-term environmental consequences<\/a> remains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geophysics\/files\/2016\/08\/OilRig.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-587\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geophysics\/files\/2016\/08\/OilRig-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"OilRig\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geophysics\/files\/2016\/08\/OilRig-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geophysics\/files\/2016\/08\/OilRig-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geophysics\/files\/2016\/08\/OilRig-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visited Eastern Montana last week.
