

{"id":543,"date":"2015-05-01T16:19:01","date_gmt":"2015-05-01T20:19:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geophysics\/?p=543"},"modified":"2015-05-01T16:26:40","modified_gmt":"2015-05-01T20:26:40","slug":"pycon-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/geophysics\/2015\/05\/01\/pycon-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"PYCON 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of my scientific career I&#8217;ve relied on Matlab for algorithm development.\u00a0 But recently I&#8217;ve started exploring programming in Python.\u00a0 The benefits for scientists\u00a0 of converting to Python from Matlab are laid out in this <a title=\"Matlab vs Python\" href=\"https:\/\/metarabbit.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/18\/why-python-is-better-than-matlab-for-scientific-software\/\">Blog post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being on sabbatical has given me the freedom to retool, and for the first time I attend <a href=\"http:\/\/us.pycon.org\/2015\/\">PYCON<\/a>, a conference devoted to python programmers from all disciplines.\u00a0 I enjoyed the conference, and I&#8217;ve started working in Python more this spring, but I suspect that for the foreseeable future I will have a foot in both camps.\u00a0 There are just too many toolkits written for geophysics in Matlab to let go entirely!\u00a0 One example is <a href=\"http:\/\/users.uoa.gr\/~atzanis\/matgpr\/matgpr.html\">matGPR,<\/a> a wonderful processing package for ground penetrating radar data written by <a href=\"mailto:atzanis@geol.uoa.gr\">Andreas Tzanis<\/a> that I prefer over the commercial packages because I can easily add my own tools.<\/p>\n<p>For now I will continue to work with both, but which do I teach my students?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most of my scientific career I&#8217;ve relied on Matlab for algorithm development.\u00a0 But recently I&#8217;ve started exploring programming in Python.\u00a0 The benefits for scientists\u00a0 of converting to Python from Matlab are laid out in this Blog post.
