From Doubt to Direction: How Dublin Redefined My Career Outlook

Our trip to Dublin and our numerous visits to professional organizations gave me a strong sense of purpose regarding my future career in public relations.

Something I have been concerned about recently is finding the work environment that is the best fit for me. I worry about working a boring 9-5 and not finding much purpose with the work I am doing. However, the conversations we had with the business professionals, specifically those at Alice PR, helped me to feel more at ease.

To elaborate, the ladies at Alice PR continuously brought up how much they loved working at Alice. They shared that even though it is a great office space, the thing that they loved the most about their job was the people they worked with. They felt passionate about the work they do and driven to bring about positive change to their community and all of Ireland. By talking with them, I learned that as long as I have a solid community at my place of work and feel empowered by the work the organization does, I will be happy in my job. And, as Niamh from Alice told us, if I am not enjoying the organization for which I work, I can move on to bigger and better things.

This concept was salient once again when we visited William Fry. At first, I had no idea how a law firm had anything to do with public relations, let alone environmental sustainability. However, from our meeting, I learned about their sustainability initiatives, as well as the extremely important role that their communications and public relations team plays in their operations. Additionally, they have a very collaborative team that truly enjoys their jobs. William Fry also does an excellent job at fostering employee relationships, giving their employees time off when needed, and they even have a program that gives job opportunities to special needs students. Overall, William Fry seems like a delightful place to work, and our visit solidified the idea that it truly is the workplace and your coworkers that make all the difference.

I learned much more than I possibly could have imagined during our trip, and I will take the knowledge and newfound confidence I acquired with me in my future PR career.

My Solo Snack Break

For my “Dublin on Your Own” assignment, I did what I know how to do best: shop and eat. To combine my two favorite pastimes, I went to a store called Marks & Spencer—M&S, as the locals call it—to find the most exciting and interesting snacks.

During one of our first days of the trip, I went to a mall downtown that had a Marks & Spencer, but it turned out to be just a clothing store. So, when I saw another M&S down the street from our hostel that was advertised as ‘M&S Food’, my curiosity got the best of me. And boy, am I glad it did!

As a snack enthusiast, this place was like heaven. Comparable to Trader Joe’s, the store was stocked with things like produce, snacks, prepackaged and frozen meals, and even a ginormous wine selection!

It was me and my basket against the world. I filled it up with all the fun snacks I was interested in trying. And yes, Professor Ryan, I did try Ribena. And yes, it was amazing.

Approximately €42 later, my bank account and I decided that it was time to check out. I brought my snacks to a cute little table by the bridge and dug right in. If you guys learn anything from reading this, it should be that sushi from M&S is highly disappointing (who could’ve seen that one coming!?) and their gummy candy is top tier. My favorite candy was called Squidgy Snouts by the brand Percy Pigs. The texture was unmatched. They were soft, pillowy, and the perfect mix of sweet and sour. Because they use potato starch and tapioca instead of gelatin, all the gummies I purchased were also vegan! Not only that, but the ingredients were much cleaner than those of American candy, which I greatly appreciated #healthyqueen.

My solo snack time by the River Liffey allowed some time for self-reflection, which I always love. I felt incredibly grateful to be where I was and to have the opportunity to go the Europe for the very first time!

Oh, and don’t worry, everyone! I made sure to go back to M&S before I left to grab more of my favorite things to share with my family when I got home!

A Historic Home with a Heart: CSR in Action at 14 Henrietta Street

Our visit to 14 Henrietta Street was one I will never forget. We laughed, we cried, and we left with a deep knowledge of the rich history that is 14 Henrietta Street.

When we arrived for our tour, I noticed a sign on their front desk that drew attention to their sensory box. As an avid fidget and sensory toy lover, I found this to be a remarkable example of CSR in the wild. As we learned about the history of Henrietta Street, the tour was quite heavy and somber at times. I can imagine how a child must feel during the tour, as the stories of those who lived on Henrietta Street were tragic and anxiety-inducing.

Giving not just children, but people of all ages, the opportunity to have something small to bring with them on the tour to calm them down and reduce sensory overload is an incredible initiative that the Henrietta Street tour is taking. The sensory box is a great example of a CSR initiative, and it is clear that the staff at 14 Henrietta Street truly care about the well-being of their visitors.

Fuel for the Future: What I Learned at Alice PR

Our visit to Alice PR was an especially exciting one for me, as it was my first time ever setting foot inside a PR agency. I had been looking forward to the meeting with them since we had first planned our trip’s itinerary, and it was everything I had hoped for and more.

I gained a plethora of valuable insights from the meeting, but there was one thing that captivated my attention the most. They shared with us a recent campaign they had worked on called “Alice Academy for Activists,” a boot camp for aspiring activists. The ladies of Alice shared that the bootcamp quickly became a passion project for them, and I can see why.

The goal of the bootcamp was to bring together passionate individuals who feel compelled to make a change in their community and the world around them. At the event, they were able to ask questions to a panel of professionals and get a kick-start into making the change they have always wished to see. This especially resonated with me, as I am working on getting a minor in communication and activism. Learning about this campaign showed me that there are several ways to combine my passion for PR and activism.

Furthermore, after speaking to and learning from the ladies at Alice PR, I felt a sense of confidence regarding my future career path. As someone who was undecided when I first began my journey at Temple, I often question if PR was the right decision for me, especially because of how knowledgeable and passionate my peers are. However, my time at Alice PR instilled confidence in me and brought forward my passion for the PR industry, as well as making an impact on my community and all of the organizations I will help serve in the future.

I am so glad that I had the opportunity to learn from a team of such wonderful, intelligent women who are making strides in the world of PR.

Clear Vision, Clearstream, and Clear Conscience

Our visit with Allied Irish Banks and Goodbody Clearstream was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I learned a great deal of valuable information and insights.

Firstly, I want to share that my dreams of sitting in a boardroom in business clothing with my notebook and pen have been fulfilled (yes, this is actually something I have always wanted to do). Not only that, but they provided us with coffee, tea, and fresh, warm pastries. Yes, they were warm. The apple pie pastry was everything I’ve wanted and more.

Once we began, we got the privilege of hearing and learning from Paul Kelly, Katie Heston, and John McGeown. They shared with us that the entirety of the EU is striving to be carbon-neutral, which made the environmentalist in me very happy.

John McGeown shared information about AIB’s climate action fund, specifically that their climate action target is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. I found this to be wildly impressive, and I hope that more American companies will begin/continue to implement similar targets and initiatives for the sake of our planet and overall betterment of society. John also noted the importance of trusting and believing in science and taking sustainability initiatives seriously. He informed us that focusing on sustainability practices is critical, as it helps the communities AIB and Goodbody Clearstream serve. As he noted, not only is it helping communities, but it is just the right thing to do.

I genuinely enjoyed our visit to AIB, and I cannot wait for all of our other visits we have planned for the rest of our trip!

Sláinte!

Nicole’s Intro Blog

Hi everyone!

My name is Nicole, and I am so excited for the Dublin trip. I have never traveled to Europe before, so this is a brand new journey I am thrilled to embark on.

I am a senior pubic relations major with a minor in communication and activism. I have always wanted to take part in a study abroad program, but have felt that a semester long program was too long for me. Therefore, once I found out about this opportunity with the Klein GO program, I knew it was an experience I had to take advantage of.

I started my Temple journey undecided, and not long after my freshman year, I discovered the world of PR and a passion for the field. I also am quite passionate about all things feminism, environmental activism, and LGBTQIA+ rights (my minor in communication and activism perfectly aligns with these interests). On this trip, I am looking forward to learning more about sustainability and the ways in which organizations make a conscious effort to be environmentally friendly and reduce their carbon footprint.

Outside of of the PR and academic world, I have several hobbies and passions. I grew up doing musical theater, and the theater world has greatly shaped who I am today. I love to sing and play piano, and one day would love to do PR within the music industry. I also love to play games (I am confident I can beat anyone in Mario Kart), spend quality time with my friends, and I especially love a sweet treat after a long day (and by that I mean every day:))

I am beyond grateful for the chance to travel abroad for this course, and I absolutely cannot wait for the journey that is to come.

Thanks for reading!
