Reusing the Cask!

After our trip to ThinkHOUSE, I went to the Teeling Whiskey Distillery. There, I tried a lager aged in a red wine casking. Teeling Whiskey reused various casks that previously aged another alcohol. Not only is this a act of sustainability, but it is fundamental to the creation of Teeling’s Whiskey. The act of sustainability is printed on their label.

ACTION THROUGH INTENTIONAL PERSPECTIVE

What wonderful day in Dublin. I ran four miles, went to the Jameson Distillery before hearing from the Irish Whiskey Association and Alice PR. Here is a quick recap of what I’ve learned!

Three things I’ve learned at Alice PR

  • It is critical to note the lifestyle of the audience we are trying to reach. The same approach cannot be used for all audiences. It is best to think from the perspective of the target audience. Where do they get their media? When do they have free time? What are they looking for?
  • Media relations might not always be effective when reaching short-term goals. Other forms of PR could be used like influencer marketing and policy writing.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not completely politicized yet. Again, global politics affect the PR practices and approaches of other countries.

Two Things I found Interesting

  • Alice has employees/clients in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. Their advocacy work is not limited due to politics.
  • News cycles and story themes can influence when the best time to pitch is. There is a difference in when media relations should happen based on the region. One could find a sweet spot for when to pitch to the media if they know the news cycle and the newsroom.

One thing I am Interested in learning More about

  •  I am interested in the lobbying and grant writing approaches to advocacy PR for long-term campaigns.

AN INVESTMENT FOR ALL

Today we visited the Allied Irish Banks to learn more about how sustainability layers into Irish culture, community, and legislation.

Three things I learned on this visit:

  1. You have to walk the talk. If a company only talks about sustainable practices and embedding care towards their stakeholders, but has no action, they are greenwashing. They must walk to their commitments or their practices are just commercial.
  2. If sustainability is politicized, reframe it. Change the language based on who the client is or what they know. With political pressures around the globe, there has been a shift in how we should approach speaking about sustainability practices. Similar to the pressures of DEI, it is imperative to recognize the impact of global political pressures and become intentional in how we speak about sustainability based on the client we are talking to.
  3. Be collaborative with your clients when talking about sustainability. It is important to walk with the clients and guide them through the process of building more sustainable practices. One might say, a pacer for a race should be on the shoulder of the runner.

Two Things I Found Interesting

  1. While the end goal is to pitch sustainable practices, pitching the ROIs and showing the balance sheet will help businesses understand sustainability’s role within a company.
  2. Ireland’s government puts pressure on landlords to ensure sustainable business practices through legislation.

One Thing I Want To Learn More About

  1. Impact and Risk with Sustainability. I want to learn more about double materiality: A dual approach to sustainability by viewing the financial impacts of sustainability themes while viewing the company’s effects on society and the environment.

First Study Abroad in Dublin – Rachel Kim

Hi friends!

My name is Rachel Kim. I’m a Public Relations major with a minor in Journalism. I’m in an accelerated Master of Public Policy program as well.

What excites me most about being in Dublin is the opportunity to see how PR, public policy, CSR and sustainability interact in Ireland’s culture. I believe their best pactices are worth learning from and bring back home.

One experience I’m especially looking forward to is visiting the Jameson/Irish Whiskey foundation.

Over the summer, I was and influencer marketing intern at Nike Comms. I worked on a few different spritit brands. My favorite one was BACARDÍ Rum.

Outside of class, I have a passion for music and dance. I used to teach color guard in North NJ and was in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in 2022. Continuing my passion for music, I love EDM and music festivals.

I’m currently at JFK taking a JetBlue flight! This trip is my first time doing a study abroad program, and I’m super excited to explore and travel with everyone.
