Core Teaching Philosophy<\/strong>: Excellence Begins Together<\/strong>
My teaching philosophy is grounded in a deep commitment to preparing the next generation of clinical nursing leaders with competence, compassion, and a powerful sense of advocacy. I believe that nursing education at its best ignites intellectual curiosity, cultivates authentic voice, and builds the clinical confidence students need to effect meaningful change in the lives of their patients, families, and communities. This commitment is the lens through which I design every learning experience \u2014 from bedside clinical instruction to evidence-based simulation and reflective peer-facilitated dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is professionally rewarding to feel a deep connection and commitment to the mission, values, and vision of the university, as they directly align with my own commitment to excellence in nursing education. Teaching here provides the freedom to guide students on transformational journeys of discovery \u2014 across nursing concepts, clinical skill competencies, and personal and professional growth. These journeys are grounded in clear, respectful multicultural expectations designed to promote, protect, and sustain equal opportunity of education for all people, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and ability. I willingly engage in inter-professional collaboration where my authentic voice and advocacy skills strengthen student and clinical outcomes, and I am committed to empowering and mentoring students to realize that their voices matter too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am also committed to my own continued professional growth. The collegial environment here strengthens and empowers me to expand my clinical knowledge, enrich my teaching effectiveness, and progress toward completing my post-master\u2019s Doctorate in Nursing Practice. These practices deepen my connection with the team of nursing educators and the broader academic community.

I am passionately committed to modeling and empowering my students to develop their authentic clinical eyes, hands, and voices within all learning communities through diverse, equitable, and inclusive teaching strategies \u2014 innovative, peer-facilitated, engaging, and creative. As a nurse educator, I highly value diversity, equity, and inclusion, and these three pillars form the foundation of every learning environment I create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diversity: <\/strong>I recognize the inherent value and significant contributions of all individuals regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and ability. I plan and design educational goals and rigorous, innovative teaching strategies using a universal platform that meets students where they are, setting every student up for success. I structure psychologically safe learning environments with clear, respectful multicultural expectations to promote, protect, and sustain equal educational opportunity for all. Rich, meaningful, highly interactive discussions; creative-based learning activities; and technology resources promote students\u2019 abilities to think critically, analyze, synthesize, and summarize \u2014 while developing their authentic voices and deepening clinical understanding. Self- and group-reflection activities promote individual professional growth and highlight the unique strengths of each member of the learning community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equity: <\/strong>I model a sound, professional demeanor and cultivate an equitable learning culture in all clinicals, lab, and simulation settings \u2014 marked by honesty, authenticity, justice, and freedom from bias \u2014 that fosters effective, ethical clinical judgment development. I employ a universally designed education platform incorporating knowledge inquiry, acquisition, sharing, creative problem-solving, and critical thinking. Respecting each student\u2019s natural intelligence strengths and emotional intelligence capacity, I provide diverse, equitable, and inclusive multi-modal learning opportunities through technology-based and creative teaching strategies that reach all people. From the first day of clinical, lab, simulation, or classroom instruction, I establish a positive, equitable environment grounded in respectful cultural expectations and guided by the university\u2019s diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.Inclusion: <\/strong>I create dynamic learning opportunities that engage, empower, mentor, challenge, and support students in developing their authentic verbal and written voices within a psychologically safe, diverse, and inclusive atmosphere. I recognize, value, and support the individual uniqueness of every student, which enriches the collective strength and collaborative bonds of our learning community. Through thought-provoking self- and group-reflective activities, students recognize their inherent value as human beings. I teach with passion, purpose, ethical responsibility, and a service mindset \u2014 creating a scaffolding of excellence so that students graduate prepared to thrive as solid, reliable, and inclusive members of the healthcare team.

Clinical and Skills-Based Education<\/strong>
As a college nursing professor, I thrive on preparing and training the clinical nursing leaders of tomorrow \u2014 nurses who are ready to address and solve the healthcare complexities of today. I am a role model and mentor to my students as they witness the powerful influence of advanced-level clinical confidence, nursing competence, and advocacy through authentic exchanges with diverse patients within underserved populations. With a holistic lens and humility, our future nursing clinicians learn to \u201csee\u201d the patient beyond the tubes, machines, clinical diagnoses, and health histories \u2014 understanding that life is a fragile gift placed in their care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teaching evidence-based high-quality nursing skills at the bedside, in lab, simulation, and classroom environments provides students with tailored reinforcement to address unique skill performance inconsistencies while nurturing critical thinking and deepening understanding of pathophysiological disease processes. A dynamic strategy I incorporate into clinical post-conferences is \u201cMock Clinical Rounds,\u201d in which students present assigned patients before their peers and clinical instructor, followed by open discussion focused on disease prevention, recovery, rehabilitation, palliative care, and end-of-life considerations \u2014 including exploration of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors tied to health disparities in diverse, multicultural, and underserved populations.

Motivation and Engagement: All Learners<\/strong>
As a nurse educator, I feel it is my duty and responsibility to encourage, empower, and motivate my students as they rise to become their best authentic selves. I cultivate a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and psychologically safe learning atmosphere grounded in consistent, organized, multi-modal, innovative teaching strategies that include role-playing and self-reflective activities. Grounded in the research of Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Howard Gardner, and Daniel Goleman, I design peer-facilitated learning to promote each student\u2019s individual authenticity, which strengthens the bonds of the learning community and raises overall performance and content retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student-led nursing leadership roles and clinical scenario role-playing simulation build understanding and integration of inter-professional collaborative skills while decreasing student anxiety. I arrange students in peer-partner groups to complete varied learning activities \u2014 preparing for high-fidelity emergency care simulation, conducting evidence-based research for \u201cLunch and Learn\u201d presentations, and engaging with neuro-diverse pediatric and adult patient populations. As our world navigates divisive discourse, I remain committed to teaching with authenticity, ethical responsibility, and integrity \u2014 professing within all my diverse learning communities that they can be the change the world needs: advocates, collaborators, and supporters who lift up individuals of all populations through life\u2019s most overwhelming challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
