Engineers and engineering technologists are at the forefront of developing products,
infrastructure, and processes that have the potential to advance the welfare of society in an equitable and just fashion. This course aims to kickstart your engineering career by providing an introduction to the key skills, traits, and ways of thinking that effective engineers and engineering technologists possess.
Through guest lectures and activities, you will gain an appreciation of the different majors
offered at Temple and the variety of fields where engineers work. The course will further provide you with the opportunity to practice core engineering skills (e.g., design thinking, teamwork, unit conversion, programming, spreadsheet analysis) required in all engineering disciplines.
Office Hours
An important aspect of your success in this class is taking advantage of all available resources, both inside and outside the classroom. One of these key resources is Student Drop-in Hours. Student Drop-In hours are times outside the classroom where students can be checked off for assignments, get help completing projects and assignments, and get to learn their TAs/Professors better. It is encouraged that all students go to Drop-In Hours. Below is a live updating calendar that will show all hours available.
ICAs
Most of the work you will obtain in this class is in the form of ICAs(in-class assignments). These will need to be checked off by either a TA or a professor, and you must demonstrate the knowledge meant to be built by the ICA to be checked off. Every ICA comes with written instructions which are meant to be read carefully. ICAs can only be checked off during class or office hours and must be signed off by the TA/Professor who marks you completed. This is another good reason to make sure to attend office hours.
Students in 1101 will have ICAs focused on completing assignments involving things such as the factor label method, Excel, and Micro:bit controller. Students in 1102 will have ICAs focused on using Excel and Python to solve engineering problems. All ICAs must be checked off by Tuesday at 11:59 PM. If they are not checked off by then, you will not get the chance to complete them again. Please remember that it is a best practice to try to start and complete ICAs before coming to class so that you have the proper amount of time to be checked off.
Panopto
An important software for these classes is Panopto. This software allows you to record your screen, video, and audio. This will be required for some assignments that need explanation videos. The following video shows the steps to download Panopto. Make sure you understand how to get into your TU Portal as most applications are located there.
