“There is a plan and a purpose, a value to every life, no matter what its location, age, gender or disability.”

I am pursuing a career in Therapeutic Recreation because it is the perfect blend between health care and creativity. I knew when I was picking a major that it was important to me to eventually have a career that not only paid the bills but brings meaning to my life by helping others. Recreation Therapy uses recreation and other activity- based interventions to help people advance toward their health goals. This means that modalities can range all the way from card games to adapted sailing. This excited me, however a lot of times when I tell people what I am majoring in they think it is all fun and games. but Therapeutic Recreation is a very systematic process. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) complete full assessments on individuals focusing on their physical, cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual and leisure functioning. These assessments allow CTRSs to get to know the client as a whole person not just their illness or disability. A lot of time health professionals focus on the deficits and peoples disability. Recreation Therapist look for their strengths and interests to help motivate them through their journey to better quality of life. People are so much more than their disability, as the quote at the beginning of this post suggests, there is a purpose and a value to every life no matter what that life is facing and I am so happy to be working towards a career that has that outlook on health care.
