On September 24, the Temple Environmental Law Society will welcome three attorneys for a lunchtime conversation about careers in environmental and public interest law. Our panelists bring experience from environmental advocacy and litigation, and will talk about the paths that brought them into public interest.
Kathryn Urbanowicz is Deputy Director of the Clean Air Council, a Philadelphia environmental organization focused on clean air, energy, and environmental health issues. Students will get to hear about environmental advocacy close to home and the role that lawyers may play in nonprofit environmental organizations.
Charlie McPhedran is a Senior Attorney with Earthjustice in Philadelphia. His work has focused on clean air and energy issues, including litigation and advocacy aimed at reducing pollution from power plants and other industrial sources and protecting communities affected by air pollution. His experience offers a window into what environmental litigation and advocacy look like at one of the region’s major public-interest environmental law organizations.
Lisa Palumbo is Director of the Immigrants & Workers’ Rights Practice Group at Legal Aid Chicago, where she has spent much of her career representing low-income clients, immigrants, and workers. Her work brings another perspective on what a long-term career in public interest law can look like and how lawyers can use their careers to serve communities directly.
Together, the panelists will offer a look at several different paths into public interest practice and a chance to ask candid questions about environmental law, nonprofit work, career choices, and getting started in the field.
