In this installment, we\u2019re going to take a look at what three First Year Writing instructors are doing with AI tools like ChatGPT.<\/span><b style=\"font-weight: normal\"><\/b><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">First year writing instructor <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: bold;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Jacob Ginsburg<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> incorporated \u201cAI and education\u201d as a theme in his course. His students read Ted Chiang&#8217;s <\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/tech\/annals-of-technology\/chatgpt-is-a-blurry-jpeg-of-the-web\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1155cc;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: underline;vertical-align: baseline\">&#8220;Chat GPT is a Blurry JPEG of the Web,&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> Matteo Wong&#8217;s &#8220;<\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everand.com\/article\/650200970\/Ai-Doomerism-Is-A-Decoy\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1155cc;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: underline;vertical-align: baseline\">AI Doomerism is a Decoy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">,&#8221; and some academic articles about the role of AI in education. In class, each student writes a paragraph about what it means to them to be a member of their generation. As homework, they then give ChatGPT four tasks:<\/span><\/p><ol style=\"margin-top: 0;margin-bottom: 0;padding-inline-start: 48px\"><li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Respond to the same prompt as they wrote about in class (i.e. what it means to be a member of their generation).<\/span><\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Make an argument FOR the use of AI in education.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Make an argument AGAINST the use of AI in education.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\" role=\"presentation\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Each student devises a \u201csilly\u201d or \u201cfun\u201d task of their own.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Afterwards, everyone then discusses their prompts and results in class.<\/span><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-style: normal;font-weight: 400;text-align: var(--text-align);font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif\">Professor <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;text-align: var(--text-align);font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;font-weight: bold\">Amy Friedman<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;font-weight: 400;text-align: var(--text-align);font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"> challenges her students to write an essay in which they summarize several disparate, current articles on generative AI in education and learning. She has used articles such as Valerie Pisano\u2019s <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 17px;text-align: var(--text-align)\" href=\"http:\/\/ink.gale.com\/apps\/doc\/A752459238\/OVIC?u=temple_main&amp;sid=bookmark-%20OVIC&amp;xid=e6eed9fa\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal\">&#8220;Label AI-Generated Content,&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-style: normal;font-weight: 400;text-align: var(--text-align);font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"> Allison R. Chen\u2019s <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 17px;text-align: var(--text-align)\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1172\/JCI173283.%2010%2011%2012%2013%2014\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal\">&#8220;Research training in an AI world,&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-style: normal;font-weight: 400;text-align: var(--text-align);font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"> and Naomi S. Baron\u2019s, <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 17px;text-align: var(--text-align)\" href=\"http:\/\/ink.gale.com\/apps\/doc\/UVAIJM713843016\/OVIC?u=temple_main&amp;sid=bookmark-OVIC&amp;xid=109cdfa7\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal\">&#8220;How ChatGPT Robs Students of Motivation to Write and Think for Themselves.&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-style: normal;font-weight: 400;text-align: var(--text-align);font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif\"> Her goal is for each student to formulate and articulate their own opinion about the role of generative AI in their own learning and education. Beforehand, students explore ChatGPT in class, including asking it to write in response to previous essay prompts. The class then collectively assesses the results and compares them to their own writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38;margin-top: 0pt;margin-bottom: 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Meanwhile at Temple\u2019s Japan campus, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: bold;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\">Ryan Rashotte<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;color: #1f1f1f;background-color: #ffffff;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;text-decoration: none;vertical-align: baseline\"> has developed two activities for his first year writing students. In the first one, students writing essays about a film ask ChatGPT to write a paragraph regarding how a specified element in the film supports a theme they are exploring. In response, students write about the strengths and weaknesses of ChatGPT\u2019s argument. In the second assignment, students working in groups explore which art form they think is superior &#8211; television or film. As part of this investigation, they query ChatGPT for reasons in support of their choice. Students identify new and\/or interesting arguments and identify their strengths and weaknesses. They are asked to consider how well the ChatGPT output would work if it were incorporated into their essay.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: normal\"><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;font-family: Arial, sans-serif;background-color: transparent;font-weight: 400;font-style: normal\">In the next installment, we\u2019ll be looking at the way AI tools are being used in a variety of health sciences learning environments.
