

{"id":362,"date":"2015-01-20T15:10:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T20:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/edvice-test\/?p=362"},"modified":"2023-08-29T10:40:21","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T14:40:21","slug":"student-success-a-conference-success-at-temple-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/edvice-test\/2015\/01\/20\/student-success-a-conference-success-at-temple-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Success a Conference Success at Temple University"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/teaching.temple.edu\/sites\/teaching\/files\/styles\/featured_image\/public\/edvice\/TLCFC15-001.jpg?itok=CnN7scKA&amp;c=bd70d93f362087397a1b9dca463a630e\" alt=\"Dr. Tinto's Keynote \" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 130 instructors from around the region joined over 100 faculty and administrators from Temple University at the Teaching and Learning Center\u2019s 13th Annual Faculty Conference on Teaching Excellence. \u00a0This year\u2019s theme,\u00a0<em>Student Success<\/em>, focused on ways faculty can support student success inside and out of the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference was designed to reflect the Teaching and Learning Center\u2019s belief in learning-centered teaching and active learning. During the keynote address as well as the breakout sessions, educators were given the opportunity to discuss research-based teaching methods with an interdisciplinary group of colleagues from two-year and four-year schools around the region. Faculty were also given several opportunities to individually reflect on their own role in student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out&nbsp;Temple Faculty member Jonathan Singer\u2019s recap of the conference through social media&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/socworkpodcast\/temple-university-13th-annual-faculty-conferece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on storify<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Keynote Address<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TLC was honored to invite Dr. Vincent Tinto, author of the books&nbsp;<em>Leaving College<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Completing College&nbsp;<\/em>as this year\u2019s keynote speaker. Dr. Tinto\u2019s address,&nbsp;<em>Student Success Does Not Arise By Chance<\/em>&nbsp;began by highlighting the importance of classroom success\u2014\u201cone class, one course at a time,\u201d to a larger institutional goal:&nbsp;<em>student success<\/em>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Tinto focused the discussion on four key factors to student success:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(high) expectations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assessment and feedback<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the general session, Dr. Tinto took questions and examples from the audience of strategies and methods to student success. He highlighted several programs such as early warning systems, learning communities and first year experience courses as strategies that have been successful. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In closing Dr. Tinto reminded the audience, \u201cthe object of education is student learning. Retention is merely the vehicle by which it can arise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Breakout and Poster Sessions<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teaching.temple.edu\/file\/981\">TLCFC15-003.jpg<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/teaching.temple.edu\/sites\/teaching\/files\/TLCFC15-003.jpg\" alt=\"Breakout and Poster Sessions\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Morning and afternoon breakout sessions focused on a variety of research-based strategies that lead to student success in the classroom and were facilitated by members of the Temple University Provost\u2019s Teaching Academy. Click here to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/teaching.temple.edu\/sites\/tlc\/files\/TLC-fc15-%20Breakout%20Sessions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read summaries of each session<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s call for poster session proposals brought in over thirty-five submissions from educators affiliated with regional institutions such as Rowan University, Philadelphia University, and University of Pennsylvania.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/teaching.temple.edu\/sites\/tlc\/files\/TLC-fc15-Poster%20Session.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twenty-four posters<\/a>&nbsp;were selected for presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conference attendees voted and selected \u201cThe Trauma-Informed Classroom: Understanding the Neuroscience of a Student\u2019s Capacity to Learn Following Exposure to Traumatic Events,\u201d by Pierce College\u2019s Kathleen Watson, as this year\u2019s best poster.
