Blog #3: Social Media Psychology

An article that I found in my research was one called, “College Student Athletes and Social Media: The Psychological Impacts of Twitter Use” (2018). The authors of the study analyzed Twitter-using NCAA Division-1 student athletes at a large public midwestern university for the effects of Twitter on those athletes. The authors conducted a focus-group interview with seven of these student athletes. The authors asked why the athletes use Twitter, how they use Twitter, how Twitter affects them as athletes, and how Twitter affects their teams. The study found that the athletes used Twitter very intentionally and responsibly, and reaped many of the benefits it offered. It went on to say, however, that despite the “intentionality and care that participants used while interfacing with Twitter, they were not able to completely sidestep the effects of critical tweets.”

This directly supports one of the topics I am considering addressing with my project, prominent athletes and social media. There is a lot offered by this article, offering accounts from real Division-1 athletes on their social media experience. That said, there were many limitations to this research, and the authors made that clear in their article. While this will be a useful piece of research to integrate into my project, a lot more research is needed on this topic. This article focused on qualitative data from a small sample size from one specific school, and if I am to base my project on this topic, I will need more data, including qualitative data from Division-1 athletes from other schools, as well as professional athletes.

This week, I have not made significant progress on my project aside from continued deliberation on my topic idea, as I am still trying to narrow-down specifics.

A podcast that I listen to often that is definitely one of the pieces of inspiration behind my project is the Green Light podcast with Chris Long. Chris Long is a former NFL player who hosts a podcast on which he and his co-hosts discuss NFL football, as well as other sports and related topics. The primary nature of the podcast is the discussion of current events in the NFL and the rest of the sports world. That said, on many episodes, Chris and his co-hosts will host long-form interviews with NFL athletes and other significant figures, including a recent interview I listened to with former Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. The interview aspect of Green Light is definitely the aspect that will be most applicable for my project.

The primary research I will have to do for my project is for technical skills of audio production. I have little experience with producing audio of professional quality, so it is definitely something I will have to do research on. That said, I am taking two journalism courses this semester that will address audio recording and production, which should certainly assist my research in that regard. Topical research will certainly be needed, however, my exact topic is still a work-in-progress so the nature of said research will become clearer in the coming weeks.

My MA Project topic is still coming together and something I am still narrowing down.  My initial thought is that my project will have the final form of a podcast, as I want to focus my future work on audio media, such as radio broadcasting and podcasting.  That said, I am still putting consideration int0 producing my project as a video podcast or “vodcast,” that can be published on a video platform such as YouTube, while also being fit for publish on an audio podcast platform such as Spotify.  While I am not as focused on video production in my future career aspirations, adding a video element to my project could help me to develop and showcase a more versatile skillset for myself.  With regards to the content of my project, I want to address a topic related to the field of sports.  I am still determining the exact details of my project, but I am leaning toward focusing on the fan experience and fan culture in sports, particularly how sports affect the fans that watch them.  I like the idea of interviewing certain sports fans about the positive impacts of sports on their lives.  That said, my topic is still not set in stone and I am considering all options.

An example of a prior project that stood out to me was Matt Kasznel’s “The Athlete” podcast.  The content of Matt’s research seems like it will likely be very different from the research that I will conduct for my project, but the podcast format is definitely similar to what I am looking to achieve with my project, as well as the relation to sports.  I love Matt’s inclusion of natural sound and fan interviews at the Eagles game at Lincoln Financial Field, as well as audio clips from sports broadcasts and other related media that supported his project.  Similar audio clips and interviews are something I definitely intend to utilize in my project.
