Cure Violence Philadelphia is a structured violence prevention program. We use the Cure Violence global model which is based on the premise that violence is a public health issue and can be prevented. Our goal is to prevent violence in North Philadelphia and surrounding areas by using a trauma-informed approach and working closely with the community, especially those at risk for violence involvement.
Our program is housed in the Center for Urban Bioethics at Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine. The program was established in 2011 and since then has shown a 30% reduction in shootings in Cure Violence neighborhoods vs. non-Cure Violence neighborhoods. In the last 3 years, our team has mentored nearly 1,000 individuals at high risk for being involved in violence and mediated more than 150 conflicts, preventing them from escalating to shootings or violent events.
