Temple-headquartered STARS Computing Corps and Dr. Jamie Payton receive a $3 million National Science Foundation grant<\/strong><\/strong>
The goal of STARS is to make college computing department practices more equitable and inclusive places where individuals from historically underrepresented groups in computing\u2014 including Black, Hispanic, female and people with disabilities\u2014can be their authentic selves and participate fully in computing education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTemple is the perfect place for STARS to be headquartered because it welcomes students from a lot of different backgrounds,\u201d said Jamie Payton, chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Temple, lead investigator of the new NSF award, and executive director of STARS. \u201cIt\u2019s in a diverse city, and the student population has reflected that over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CST Professor Maria Lorenz earns Great Teacher Award<\/strong>
Maria Lorenz, professor of instruction in the Department of Mathematics, has earned Temple University’s Great Teacher Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 1988 by the Board of Trustees, the Temple University Great Teacher Awards recognize faculty members annually for their continuous excellence in teaching. Each award carries a stipend of $15,000, and each awardee receives a commemorative sculpture and framed certificate. In addition, each recipient’s name is engraved on the Great Teachers Wall in the Founder’s Garden. The awards are presented at a special convocation in spring which honors individual winners and their contributions to Temple’s tradition of teaching excellence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

MID-ATLANTIC STUDENT COLLOQUIUM ON SPEECH, LANGUAGE, AND LEARNING (MASC-SLL 2022)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The 9th\u00a0Mid-Atlantic Student Colloquium on Speech, Language and Learning (MASC-SLL 2022)<\/a>\u00a0is a one-day event bringing together graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and researchers from universities and industry in the Mid-Atlantic area. The colloquium is an opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to present preliminary or completed work and to network with other researchers working in related fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event will feature two awesome keynote speakers:\u00a0Ellie Pavlick<\/a>\u00a0(Brown University\/Google) and\u00a0Alexander Rush<\/a>\u00a0(Cornell University \/ Huggingface).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students and postdocs should submit a one-page abstract\u00a0describing ongoing, planned, or completed research on computational approaches to speech, language, and learning. Accepted submissions will be presented as either posters or talks. We strongly encourage you to submit anything from\u00a0work-in-progress\u00a0to\u00a0work that has been previously published and presented\u00a0at a conference. All are welcome!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
