

{"id":88,"date":"2024-10-24T20:40:38","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T00:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/chemdemo\/?p=88"},"modified":"2024-10-25T16:22:01","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T20:22:01","slug":"solubility-and-ph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/chemdemo\/2024\/10\/24\/solubility-and-ph\/","title":{"rendered":"Solubility and pH"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To demonstrate how pH affects the solubility of Mg(OH)\u2082.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Procedure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Discussion:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask students if they have heard of milk of magnesia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show a bottle and inquire what it is used to treat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Initial Experiment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dissolution:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take some solid milk of magnesia and add it to water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate that it does not dissolve well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discuss its solubility product constant (Ksp) and explain that it is sold as a suspension (use a clear bottle for visibility).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Ion Effect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adding NaOH:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take 1 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and ask students to predict the solubility of Mg(OH)\u2082.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add some milk of magnesia to the NaOH solution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observe the cloudiness and discuss the common ion effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Le Chatelier\u2019s Principle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adding HCl:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) and explain that it is very similar to stomach acid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat the dissolution exercise with HCl and discuss Le Chatelier\u2019s Principle in relation to solubility changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discussion on Dosage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommended Dosage:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask students if people always take the recommended dose of milk of magnesia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discuss the effects of an overdose (excess magnesium hydroxide).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demonstrate that excess magnesium hydroxide does not dissolve and compare its behavior to that of sodium hydroxide as an antacid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Purpose To demonstrate how pH affects the solubility of Mg(OH)\u2082.
