

{"id":36,"date":"2024-10-24T12:24:57","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T16:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/chemdemo\/?p=36"},"modified":"2024-10-25T16:22:14","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T20:22:14","slug":"boyles-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/chemdemo\/2024\/10\/24\/boyles-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Boyle&#8217;s Law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To demonstrate Boyle\u2019s Law in action using a model set of lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Model lungs (located on the shelf over Dr. Hill\u2019s desk)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New latex sheet (available from Flinn)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vacuum chamber with vacuum pump<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marshmallow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collapsible can<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bunsen burner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10 mL of water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Procedure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Model Lungs Demonstration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Setup:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take the model lungs and explain the setup to the students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover the top hole of the lungs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Volume Change:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stretch out the diaphragm to increase the volume of the lungs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask students to predict what will happen to the pressure inside the lungs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pressure Change:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remove your finger from the top hole and demonstrate that higher air pressure outside the lungs forces air into the balloons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat the process in the opposite direction (decreasing volume).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Latex Sheet:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure that the model lungs have a new latex sheet for proper functioning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vacuum Chamber Demonstration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Marshmallow Observation:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place a marshmallow inside the vacuum chamber.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask students to predict what will happen when the vacuum is applied and then removed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collapsing Can Experiment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preparation:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place 10 mL of water in the collapsible can.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heat the can over a Bunsen burner until all the water has evaporated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sealing:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quickly stopper the can to trap the steam inside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These demonstrations effectively illustrate Boyle\u2019s Law, showcasing the relationship between pressure and volume in gases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Purpose To demonstrate Boyle\u2019s Law in action using a model set of lungs.
