Use fresh water for each piece.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Neutralize:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Immerse each piece of paper in 250 mL of 1 M NaHCO\u2083.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If substantial bubbling occurs, re-rinse in water and neutralize in NaHCO\u2083 again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dry:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spread the treated paper on paper towels to dry overnight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demonstration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To demonstrate the burning of flash paper, light a candle or Bunsen burner and throw the paper into the flame.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Observation:<\/strong> The flash paper burns very quickly and leaves, at most, a tiny residue of white ash.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Large amounts of flash paper should not be stored for any length of time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Materials Needed Procedure Safety Precautions This experiment demonstrates the preparation of flash paper, the principles of nitration and combustion.
