<\/strong>Undergraduate Researcher,\u00a0Colin Murphy<\/a><\/strong>, was awarded Honorable Mention at the Temple University Undergraduate Research Symposium. Colin’s poster “Plasmonic Hot Electron Induced Hydrogenation of an Organic Dye.\u00a0Colin Murphy, Devika Sil, and Eric Borguet<\/em>.” The poster was selected for presentation at the grand opening of the new Science and Research Center (SERC<\/a>) for homecoming in October 2014.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Borguet group members\u00a0Zhihai Li<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sepideh Afsari<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0lead Electrochemistry workshop at Temple University.<\/em>
A workshop on\u00a0Electrochemistry<\/a> (principles and applications) will be offered by Dr. Zhihai Li with the assistance of Sepideh Afsari, both members of the electrochemistry\/scanning probe\/ single molecule team. There will be 8, one hour sessions, held on Wednesdays starting July 10 in Beury 226 at noon.<\/p>\n

Established in 1995 by the estate of Tomlinson (BA ’26, MA ’28’ Chem), a long-time member of the chemistry faculty, the scholarship is awarded to undergraduate chemistry students who have demonstrated academic achievement and financial need.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Borguet Group alumni member\u00a0Oleksandr Isaienko<\/a><\/strong> assumed a position of Laser Scientist in the Research and Development department of Quantronix Corporation.
<\/em>With his new position Oleksandr will apply experience obtained during his Ph.D. studies in the Borguet group at Temple to various projects at Quantronix, including parametric sources.<\/p>\n

Borguet Group alumni member\u00a0Dr. Nikolay Dementev<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0awarded prestigious\u00a0JSPS<\/a> postdoctoral fellowship<\/em>.
Nikolay is now working as a JSPS postdoctoral fellow in the group of\u00a0Professor Naotoshi Nakashima at Kyushu University<\/a>\u00a0(Japan). His research mainly focuses on materials science.<\/p>\n

An successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation on December 8th, 2010. Her work with Prof. Gonzalo Cosa at McGill created luminescent nanostructures involving the anionic light-emitting poly(phenylene vinylene) MPS-PPV in complex with lipid vesicles or silica beads, towards applications in biological sensing.<\/p>\n

<\/em>Oleksandr Isaienko, a senior graduate student in the Borguet group, has been awarded the 2010\u00a0Swern Fellowship<\/a>. The Swern Fellowship was established as a memorial to Professor Daniel Swern, a truly distinguished member of the Fels Research Institute and the Department of Chemistry. It was designed to help outstanding graduate students as they pursue their dissertation research.

Dr. Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei<\/a><\/strong> accepted a postdoctoral postion in CA. (October 2010)
<\/em>Ali is now working as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Professor Stephen Leone at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research focuses on the time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of pure and doped helium droplets.<\/p>\n

Dr. Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0received the\u00a0Coblentz and William G. Fateley student awards<\/a>. (October 2010)<\/em>
The\u00a0Coblentz Society’s William G. Fateley student award<\/a>\u00a0was founded by the family and former group members of William G. Fateley, in conjunction with The Coblentz Society and The Society for Applied Spectroscopy, to honor the career and life of William G. Fateley. The award consists of a $1000 prize to the selected student.

Dr. Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei <\/a><\/em><\/strong>defended his dissertation. (October 2010) <\/em><\/p>\n

Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei defended his Ph.D. dissertation titled “Ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy and dynamics of water at surfaces.” He is the recipient of several awards based on his work in the ultrafast vibrational dynamics of water at hydrophobic and hydrophilic interfaces. The most recent ones are the Coblentz student award and the inaugural William G. Fateley student award which were given to him at the annual Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Society meeting in October 2010 in Raleigh NC.<\/p>\n

Roozbeh has played an irreplaceable role in the group and we are very happy he is getting to do what he always wanted and wish him great success.<\/p>\n

The grant will cover all expenses as Aseem travels to California to present his research at the American Medical Student Association’s (AMSA) 60th National Convention. Aseem has been accepted to present the poster titled “Detection of antibody binding events via AFM and fluorescence microscopy for calibration of piezoelectric microcantilever sensor (PEMS) response” (Category: Basic Science).<\/p>\n

Undergraduate student Gordon Chiu, in the Borguet Group, received a Student Award from The Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS). Gordon presented his poster at the EAS annual meeting on November 17th and received his plaque in the Award Luncheon.
The award recognizes the scientific achievements and research talent in undergraduate students. Gordon has been actively involved in the carbon nanotube research at the Borguet group and he has participated in a numbers of conferences. Dr. Youn-Geun Kim, a world-class expert in scanning tunneling microscopy, has joined the Borguet group as a Research Assistant Professor.\u00a0 He will lead the scanning probe microscopy team in the investigation of electrochemical reactions at the single molecule level, as well as our single molecular conductivity project.\u00a0 He will also help to develop new research directions and partnerships.<\/p>\n

Roozbeh Ghavami joined the Borguet group this month. Roozbeh has earned degrees from Temple University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and is planning to attend medical school. His interests include immunology and oncology.<\/p>\n

Professor Jianguo Wang<\/a><\/em><\/strong> joins the Borguet Group. (June 2009)<\/em>
As of May 2009, the Borguet Group gained a visiting scholar, Jianguo Wang, from China. Professor Wang has earned degrees at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been a professor at the College of Chemistry at Liaoning University since 2003. Dr. Wang’s research within the Borguet Group will involve using carbon nanopipettes (CNPs) to analyze buffer capacity in cells.<\/p>\n

Baofang Zhao<\/a><\/em><\/strong> joins the Borguet Group. (June 2009)<\/em>
Baofang Zhao has become a new member of the Borguet group, joining to do undergraduate research in May 2009. Baofang is a rising junior at Temple University on the pre-pharmacy track and will be doing research within the field of surface chemistry, focused mainly on the biological aspects of this research.<\/p>\n

Dr. Fei Li, a China native, has joined the Borguet group as of May 2009. Dr. Li has earned an M.S. degree in Electrochemistry at Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, studied at Chinese Academy of Sciences in China in 2004, and earned a Ph.D degree in Electrochemistry at University of Warwick in England in 2008. Dr. Li’s research will involve using carbon nanopipettes (CNPs) to detect bio-systems with electrochemical techniques.<\/p>\n

Graduate student Oleksandr Isaienko, has received a fellowship from the\u00a0German Academic Exchange Service\u00a0<\/a>to study and perform research in Germany. Oleksandr plans to visit the group of\u00a0Professor Peter Vohringer<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Bonn in the fall of 2009.<\/p>\n

Yangjun Xing was awarded second place at\u00a02009 Student Research Poster Symposium for Best Posters.\u00a0 Yangjun’s poster was titled “Single Molecule Conductivity Measurement of Peptide Nucleic Acids.” Students from all six departments were given the opportunity to present their latest research and receive feedback from judges, faculty and other students. First place best poster winners received a $100 award and second place winners received $50. Congrations Yangjun!<\/p>\n

Gordon Chiu, an undergraduate student doing research in the Borguet group, won the first prize in the physical chemistry division at the Intercollegiate Student Chemists Convention (ISCC). The 73rd Annual Intercollegiate Student Chemists Convention<\/a>\u00a0was hosted by\u00a0Franklin & Marshall College<\/a> on April 18th. Over fifty students from 16 colleges presented their research. Gordon presented his work on the “Luminescence of Fluorophores on Carbon Nanotube Surface.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Aseem Malhotra was awarded the\u00a0Diamond Research Scholars\u00a0grant by the\u00a0Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies<\/a> for the project titled “Novel Piezoelectric Microcantilever Sensor to recognize HER2 Antigens for Breast Cancer Detection.” The scholarship is awarded to Temple students for extensive research in a field of choice for a ten-week period during the summer.<\/p>\n

Andrii Buvailo, a visiting graduate student in the Borguet Group, was awarded one of the poster prizes in the Philadelphia Section of the\u00a0American Chemical Society (ACS) Ninth Annual Graduate Student and Fourth Annual Undergraduate Poster Session\u00a0which was held on January 22, 2009 at Temple University.\u00a0 Andrii’s poster described his research on the creation and study of adsorption-semiconductor gas sensors and their application for hydrogen detection, which has developed as a collaboration between his home institution (National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv) and Temple.\u00a0

Dr. Eric A. McArthur, formerly an undergraduate researcher in the Borguet laboratory from 2000-2003, successfully defended his dissertation on July 22, 2008. Eric’s dissertation work “Time-Resolved Second Harmonic Generation Studies at Aqueous Liquid Interfaces” investigated molecular photophysics and photochemstry in theses unique environments. The research was carried out under the guidance of Professor Ken Eisenthal at Columbia University in New York City.<\/p>\n

The award was established in 1974 by Estelle and Martin Paclin, Law ’32, the parents of Richard Asher Paclin, CST ’73, who demonstrated exceptional achievements. The Paclin award is presented to a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated superior academic success in the chemistry program. Taro, a visiting student from the Kubawata group at Osaka University of Japan, was in the group from January to March 2008. His research was in the non linear optics team where he became familiar with the laser spectroscopy, in particular ultrafast surface spectroscopy. In return Taro taught us about semiconductor nanocrystals, a topic of possible collaboration between our groups.<\/p>\n

Fuyuo Nagayama, a high school student and member of the Borguet Group, is proud to announce winning a 2nd place award in Chemistry at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science State Fair held on May 14th-16th 2006. Fuyou also received the Junior Award from Pennsylvania Science Talent Search. This is not the first time he has participated and been awarded for his contribution to science. New high power, tunable Femtosecond laser installed.<\/em>\u00a0
We have improved the capability of our optics group by installing high power femtosecond laser (Integra-E<\/a>) and a commercial Optical Parametric Amplifier (OPA). The Integra-E from Quantronix delivers 3.5mJ at 1 kHz. The\u00a0TOPAS<\/a>\u00a0produces Signal(S)+Idler(I) in the range of 1.1-2.6um with peak\u00a0 at 1.5\u00ce\u00bcm having 900mW power. S-I Difference Frequency Generation (DFG) produces mid-IR pulses ranging from 2.7-15um with peak energy at 3.4um having 40uJ .\u00a0<\/p>\n
