Undergraduate Researcher, Colin Murphy, was awarded Honorable Mention at the Temple University Undergraduate Research Symposium. Colin’s poster “Plasmonic Hot Electron Induced Hydrogenation of an Organic Dye. Colin Murphy, Devika Sil, and Eric Borguet.” The poster was selected for presentation at the grand opening of the new Science and Research Center (SERC) for homecoming in October 2014.

Borguet group members Zhihai Li and Sepideh Afsari lead Electrochemistry workshop at Temple University.
A workshop on Electrochemistry (principles and applications) will be offered by Dr. Zhihai Li with the assistance of Sepideh Afsari, both members of the electrochemistry/scanning probe/ single molecule team. There will be 8, one hour sessions, held on Wednesdays starting July 10 in Beury 226 at noon.

Nicole received the Hazel M. Tomlinson, Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship. Borguet Group alumni member Oleksandr Isaienko assumed a position of Laser Scientist in the Research and Development department of Quantronix Corporation.
With his new position Oleksandr will apply experience obtained during his Ph.D. studies in the Borguet group at Temple to various projects at Quantronix, including parametric sources.
Borguet Group alumni member Dr. Nikolay Dementev awarded prestigious JSPS postdoctoral fellowship.
Nikolay is now working as a JSPS postdoctoral fellow in the group of Professor Naotoshi Nakashima at Kyushu University (Japan). His research mainly focuses on materials science.

Dr. An Ngo succesfully defended her dissertation. (December 2010)
An successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation on December 8th, 2010. Her work with Prof. Gonzalo Cosa at McGill created luminescent nanostructures involving the anionic light-emitting poly(phenylene vinylene) MPS-PPV in complex with lipid vesicles or silica beads, towards applications in biological sensing.

Oleksandr Isaienko awarded the 2010 Swern Fellowship. (October 2010)
Oleksandr Isaienko, a senior graduate student in the Borguet group, has been awarded the 2010 Swern Fellowship. The Swern Fellowship was established as a memorial to Professor Daniel Swern, a truly distinguished member of the Fels Research Institute and the Department of Chemistry. It was designed to help outstanding graduate students as they pursue their dissertation research.
Dr. Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei accepted a postdoctoral postion in CA. (October 2010)
Ali is now working as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Professor Stephen Leone at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research focuses on the time resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of pure and doped helium droplets.
Dr. Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei received the Coblentz and William G. Fateley student awards. (October 2010)
The Coblentz Society’s William G. Fateley student award was founded by the family and former group members of William G. Fateley, in conjunction with The Coblentz Society and The Society for Applied Spectroscopy, to honor the career and life of William G. Fateley. The award consists of a $1000 prize to the selected student.
Dr. Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei defended his dissertation. (October 2010)
Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei defended his Ph.D. dissertation titled “Ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy and dynamics of water at surfaces.” He is the recipient of several awards based on his work in the ultrafast vibrational dynamics of water at hydrophobic and hydrophilic interfaces. The most recent ones are the Coblentz student award and the inaugural William G. Fateley student award which were given to him at the annual Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Society meeting in October 2010 in Raleigh NC.

After completing his research project with the Borguet group, Roozbeh Ghavami has resumed his medical studies at Curacao in the Caribbean Islands, where he will complete his course work before moving to either Europe or US to do residency rounds. Roozbeh has played an irreplaceable role in the group and we are very happy he is getting to do what he always wanted and wish him great success.

Gordon has been selected as the recipient of the Richard Asher Paclin Memorial Prize. Gordon has demonstrated an outstanding record of achievement, showed great promise of a future development in the field of chemistry, and attained the highest scholastic average.

Aseem Malhotra awarded the URIF Grant. (March 2010)
Aseem has been awarded the Undergrdaute Research Incentive Fund (URIF) Travel Grant by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies. The grant will cover all expenses as Aseem travels to California to present his research at the American Medical Student Association’s (AMSA) 60th National Convention. Aseem has been accepted to present the poster titled “Detection of antibody binding events via AFM and fluorescence microscopy for calibration of piezoelectric microcantilever sensor (PEMS) response” (Category: Basic Science).

Gordon Chiu received Student Award from The Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS). (November 2009)
Undergraduate student Gordon Chiu, in the Borguet Group, received a Student Award from The Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS). Gordon presented his poster at the EAS annual meeting on November 17th and received his plaque in the Award Luncheon.
The award recognizes the scientific achievements and research talent in undergraduate students. Gordon has been actively involved in the carbon nanotube research at the Borguet group and he has participated in a numbers of conferences. Gordon was also one of the awardees for the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in 2009. Read more

Dmitry Kazachkin, a graduate student in the Borguet group, defended his PhD dissertation on December 12, 2008. Dmitry’s dissertation (“Investigation of chemical and adsorption properties of carbon nanotubes: building a bridge for technological applications of carbon nanotubes”) considers the effects of interaction of carbon nanotubes with simple molecules under different experimental conditions.
Dr. Yangjun Xing successfully defended his Ph.D. (September 2009)
Yangjun Xing, defended his Ph.D. dissertation and graduated in August 2009. He will be joining Ethicon (a Johnson&Johnson company). He will work in the analytical characterization team to support the development of new products for surgical care. Congratulations Dr. Xing!

Dr. Minato visits Borguet Group. (August 2009)
Dr. Taketoshi Minato, assistant professor at Tohoku University, visited Borguet group.
In his short visit, he interacted with Borguet group members to become familiar with the various research area of the group. “It was a very successful visit and I am looking forward to creating collaboration with Borguet group,” he said.
Dr. Youn-Geun Kim, STM expert, joins Borguet Group. (July 2009)
Dr. Youn-Geun Kim, a world-class expert in scanning tunneling microscopy, has joined the Borguet group as a Research Assistant Professor. He will lead the scanning probe microscopy team in the investigation of electrochemical reactions at the single molecule level, as well as our single molecular conductivity project. He will also help to develop new research directions and partnerships.

Ali Eftekhari-Bafrooei was awarded the Daniel Swern Fellowship for the summer of 2009.
This Fellowship was established a few years ago as a memorial to Professor Daniel Swern, a truly distinguished member of the Fels Research Institute and Department of Chemistry. It was designed to help outstanding graduate students as they pursue their dissertation research. Congratulations Ali!

Vivek Prakash rejoins Borguet Group. (July 2009)
Vivek Prakash, a rising senior at Bridgewater-Raritan High School in Bridgewater, NJ, has returned to the Borguet Group to continue research. This will be Vivek’s third summer with the Borguet Group. He will be working on research regarding the immobilization of biomolecules on silica surfaces.

Gwenn Pallier joined the Borguet group last month. Gwenn is currently studying at the Institute d’Optique, a graduate engineering school specializing in Optics. She will be working with Dr. Borguet’s laser group on nonlinear optics.

Roozbeh Ghavami joined the Borguet group this month. Roozbeh has earned degrees from Temple University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) and is planning to attend medical school. His interests include immunology and oncology.
Professor Jianguo Wang joins the Borguet Group. (June 2009)
As of May 2009, the Borguet Group gained a visiting scholar, Jianguo Wang, from China. Professor Wang has earned degrees at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been a professor at the College of Chemistry at Liaoning University since 2003. Dr. Wang’s research within the Borguet Group will involve using carbon nanopipettes (CNPs) to analyze buffer capacity in cells.
Baofang Zhao joins the Borguet Group. (June 2009)
Baofang Zhao has become a new member of the Borguet group, joining to do undergraduate research in May 2009. Baofang is a rising junior at Temple University on the pre-pharmacy track and will be doing research within the field of surface chemistry, focused mainly on the biological aspects of this research.
Dr. Fei Li joins the Borguet Group. (June 2009)
Dr. Fei Li, a China native, has joined the Borguet group as of May 2009. Dr. Li has earned an M.S. degree in Electrochemistry at Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, studied at Chinese Academy of Sciences in China in 2004, and earned a Ph.D degree in Electrochemistry at University of Warwick in England in 2008. Dr. Li’s research will involve using carbon nanopipettes (CNPs) to detect bio-systems with electrochemical techniques.
Oleksandr Isaienko wins DAAD fellowship. (June 2009)
Graduate student Oleksandr Isaienko, has received a fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service to study and perform research in Germany. Oleksandr plans to visit the group of Professor Peter Vohringer at the University of Bonn in the fall of 2009.
Yangjun wins poster prize. (April 2009)
Yangjun Xing was awarded second place at 2009 Student Research Poster Symposium for Best Posters. Yangjun’s poster was titled “Single Molecule Conductivity Measurement of Peptide Nucleic Acids.” Students from all six departments were given the opportunity to present their latest research and receive feedback from judges, faculty and other students. First place best poster winners received a $100 award and second place winners received $50. Congrations Yangjun!
Gordon Chiu awarded first prize at ISCC. (April 2009)
Gordon Chiu, an undergraduate student doing research in the Borguet group, won the first prize in the physical chemistry division at the Intercollegiate Student Chemists Convention (ISCC). The 73rd Annual Intercollegiate Student Chemists Convention was hosted by Franklin & Marshall College on April 18th. Over fifty students from 16 colleges presented their research. Gordon presented his work on the “Luminescence of Fluorophores on Carbon Nanotube Surface.”
Aseem Malhotra awarded Diamond Research Scholars grant. (March 2009)
Aseem Malhotra was awarded the Diamond Research Scholars grant by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies for the project titled “Novel Piezoelectric Microcantilever Sensor to recognize HER2 Antigens for Breast Cancer Detection.” The scholarship is awarded to Temple students for extensive research in a field of choice for a ten-week period during the summer.

Gordon Chiu has been awarded the Creative Arts, Research And Scholarship (CARAS) Program grant from the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies for a project entitled: “Carbon Nanotube Based Solar Cell.” This project is scheduled for September 2009, when Gordon returns from his Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.
Andrii Buvailo awarded Poster Prize at ACS Poster Session. (January 2009)
Andrii Buvailo, a visiting graduate student in the Borguet Group, was awarded one of the poster prizes in the Philadelphia Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Ninth Annual Graduate Student and Fourth Annual Undergraduate Poster Session which was held on January 22, 2009 at Temple University. Andrii’s poster described his research on the creation and study of adsorption-semiconductor gas sensors and their application for hydrogen detection, which has developed as a collaboration between his home institution (National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv) and Temple.

Oleksandr Isaienko awarded an Outstanding Graduate Research Award from the College of Science & Technology.
Oleksandr Isaienko, a graduate student in the Borguet Group, has been awarded an Outstanding Graduate Research Award from the College of Science and Technology for his research in the field of interfacial nonlinear optical spectroscopy and the development of ultra-broadband IR sources.
The award is presented to a handful of graduate students who are nominated for their distinguished achievements in their research. Congratulations, Oleksandr!
Former group member, Satoshi Nihonyanagi, is a proud new father.
Satoshi Nihonyanagi made it just in time to be present for the birth of his daughter, Rei. He was in Wako when he heard the news, and flew to the hospital in Sapporo where his wife was located. Rei was born in Sapporo at 2:00 in the afternoon on November 16th and is in good health, as well as the mother.

Qunhui Yuan, post-doctoral fellow, joins Borguet Group.
Qunhui Yuan is a post-doctoral fellow from the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICCAS), where she received her PhD in the study of super molecules self-assemblies with scanning probing microscope (SPM). In November 2008 she joined the Borguet Group and will focus her research on SPM study of nano-scale self-assemble behavior and dynamics at solid interfaces and Acoustic Wave Sensors.
Habibe Durmaz, graduate student from Turkey, joins Borguet Group.
Habibe Durmaz Ates is an international master student from Konya, Turkey majoring in the field of nanoimaging at Temple University. In October 2008 she joined the Borguet Group to further her knowledge in the field of nanotechnology.
Dr. Eric McAuthur, former Borguet Lab undergrad gets PhD.
Dr. Eric A. McArthur, formerly an undergraduate researcher in the Borguet laboratory from 2000-2003, successfully defended his dissertation on July 22, 2008. Eric’s dissertation work “Time-Resolved Second Harmonic Generation Studies at Aqueous Liquid Interfaces” investigated molecular photophysics and photochemstry in theses unique environments. The research was carried out under the guidance of Professor Ken Eisenthal at Columbia University in New York City.

Sean Keuleyan heads to Chicago for graduate school.
Graduated in May 2008, Sean is now studying toward his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of Chicago and intends to pursue a career in academics, continuing the research and educational practices he’s picked up from his time in the Borguet Group.
Allison Pymer heads to the west for graduate school.
Allison graduated with her B.S. in Chemistry from Temple University in May 2008. This fall she will begin her adventures in the Ph.D. program at the University of California, Berkeley, researching with a yet-to-be determined group in the Physical Chemistry Division of the College of Chemistry. Barring any unforeseen natural disasters during the next few years, Allison plans on enjoying the locally-grown produce and excellent weather that the region has to offer.
High school student, Vivek Prakash, studies with Borguet Group.
Vivek Prakash is a 16 year-old high school student at Bridgewater Raritan in New Jersey, and is completing his internship with the Borguet Group. He is a part of the Physician Science Training Program and will be here for two months. Vivek, who’s here for his second summer as an intern, works one-on-one with Borguet Group researcher Ali Eftekhari and studies self assembled monolayers.

Guillaume Lamour visits Borguet Group from Paris France.
Guillaume Lamour is a research student from the University of Paris Descartes, France. He is Cellular and Molecular Biophysics PhD candidate and will be studying with the Borguet Group for three months. Guillaume’s work focuses on neuronal cell adhesion and in his research, he hopes to improve his global understanding of surface chemistry.
Sean Keuleyan awarded Richard Asher Paclin Memorial Prize from the College of Science & Technology. (May 2008)
Sean Keuleyan, graduate of Chemistry from the Borguet Group has been awarded the Richard
Asher Paclin Memorial Prize from the College of Science & Technology at Temple University.
The award was established in 1974 by Estelle and Martin Paclin, Law ’32, the parents of Richard Asher Paclin, CST ’73, who demonstrated exceptional achievements. The Paclin award is presented to a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated superior academic success in the chemistry program. The award recipient is determined by the Department of Chemistry, and is expedited through an awards ceremony held on graduation day. Congratulations Sean!
Taro Uematsu, visiting Ph.D. student from Osaka University spends three months in the Borguet Group.
Taro, a visiting student from the Kubawata group at Osaka University of Japan, was in the group from January to March 2008. His research was in the non linear optics team where he became familiar with the laser spectroscopy, in particular ultrafast surface spectroscopy. In return Taro taught us about semiconductor nanocrystals, a topic of possible collaboration between our groups.

“Near-Infrared Non-Collinear Optical Parametric Amplification in Bulk Potassium-Titanyl Phosphate with >2500 cm-1 Bandwidth” by Oleksandr Isaienko and Eric Borguet has been accepted for an oral presentation at the 2008 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO). The talk has been scheduled on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at 5:15 PM.
The CLEO conference is conducted every year and it focuses on the latest fundamental and technological achievements in the field of lasers and electro-optics. Dr. Lindsay Bombalski, former undergraduate researcher in the Borguet group, earns PhD in Chemistry.
Dr. Lindsay Bombalski, former Borguet Group undergraduate student, graduated with her PhD in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. She will begin a postdoc fellowship at the National Energy Research Laboratory (NETL) on Feb 4th. Her research will focus on pollutant capture and alternative energies.

Dr. Vasiliy Fomenko, Borguet Group PhD, appointed Senior Scientist at Landauer. (November 2007)
Dr. Vasiliy Fomenko, a Borguet Group PhD graduate, accepted a position as Senior Scientist at Landauer, a leader in radiation monitoring. Landauer launched a new research initiative to develop technology for volumetric optical data storage. Dr. Fomenko will use his skills in optics and materials in development of new products. Graduate Student Yangjun Xing Presents “Getting Wired, One Molecule at a Time! Charge Transfer through Single Molecules” for Chemistry After Dark. (October 2007)
On October 25, 2007 @ 6:30pm in Buery Hall Room 413, Yangjun Xing presented “Getting Wired, One Molecule at a Time! Charger Transfer through Single Molecules.” His talk inspired so many questions that the one hour talk was extended to almost two hours. Yangjun managed to finish the talk after two bottles of beer. (Yes, you read correctly, BEER!)
Chemistry After Dark Symposiums are research talks given by graduate students in Chemistry for other graduate students in Chemistry. Chemistry After dark is organized by Kurt Kistler.
The purpose of the Symposium is to provide a relaxed and friendly environment for students to learn about the hottest research going on in the chemistry department, and for speakers to learn how to give a research talk to a wide and varied audience.

Dr. Borguet Travels to Japan as Visiting Fellow. (June 2007)
Eric Borguet was selected as a visiting fellow by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. This fellowship is designed to allow senior scientists to pursue collaborative research in Japanese universities. In June, Dr. Borguet traveled to Japan and presented seminars at several Japanese universities and research institutes as well as gave an invited talk at the International Conference on Electrified Interfaces in Sahoro, Hokkaido. Previous Temple recipients of this fellowship include College of Science and Technology Dean Hai-Lung Dai and chemistry Professors Franklin A. Davis and Scott Sieburth.
Dr. Kramer Campen Graduates with PhD. (May 2007)
On May 29th, 2007 Kramer Campen defended his PhD, titled “From Angstroms to Microns: Studies of Interfaces and Macromolecules with Geochemical Implications using Computational and Nonlinear Optical Tools,” in the Department of Geosciences at Penn St. Starting in August he will be a post doctoral researcher at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in Amsterdam where he will study the physical chemistry of the membrane/lipsome/water and mineral/water interfaces and continue his habit, well established in his years in the Borguet group, of being the only geochemist in the building.
Borguet Group Receives $500,000 NSF Grant to Study Molecular Wires. (April, 2007)
Chemistry’s Eric Borguet has received nearly $500,000 from the National Science Foundation as part of a $2 million collaborative effort to study how electronic charge moves through Peptide Nucleic Acid (PNA).

At the 2007 Chautauqua on Non Linear Optics at Purdue University, 3 members of the Borguet group were participants. Each student gave a brief presentation on their area of interest. Oleksandr Isaienko presented on “Broadband Optical Parametric Amplifiers: Tools for Ultrafast Non-Linear Optical Studies,” Allison Pymer presented on “Nonlinear Optical Studies of Colloidal Particle Interfaces” and Ali Eftekhar-Bafrooei presented on “Ultrafast Vibrational Spectroscopy of Molecular Interfaces.”
Members of the group were also allotted time to break up into groups with other students, work on problems, compare notes, and tour Ji-Xin Cheng’s NLO Imaging Laboratory in Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering.
Elom Amoussou-Kepto, Borguet Group Member, recipient of the 2007-2008 Camille and Bill Cosby Scholarship in Science.
Elom Amoussou-Kepto, an undergraduate research student with the Borguet Group, has been selected as the senior recipient of the 2007-2008 Camille and Bill Cosby Scholarship in Science. According to the Cosby Scholarship Selection committee, his “academic achievement and supporting faculty letter were notable and impressive. The pool of talented candidates this year was strong, and the selection committee was faced with a difficult challenge in choosing from among many worth candidates.”
Catherine Faler, Borguet Group undergraduate 2002, earns PhD from University of Pennsylvania.
Catherine Faler did undergraduate research in the Borguet group from 1999 to 2001. She is a co-author on Second Harmonic Generation from Chemically Modified Ge(111) Interfaces. She defended her dissertation thesis, “Synthesis and Applications of Cyclopropylamines and Cyclopropanols from a Ti-Mediated Cyclopropanation”. She has accepted a research position with ExxonMobil, in their chemical catalysis group in Houston.

Fuyou Nagayama, a high school student and member of Borguet Group, wins multiple science fair awards.
Fuyuo Nagayama, a high school student and member of the Borguet Group, is proud to announce winning a 2nd place award in Chemistry at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science State Fair held on May 14th-16th 2006. Fuyou also received the Junior Award from Pennsylvania Science Talent Search. This is not the first time he has participated and been awarded for his contribution to science. Nagayama won first place in chemistry at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Science Fair in February of 2006, first place in Physics along with a special award from the NAVY at the George Washington Carver Science Fair held in March of 2006, and received a 2nd place award in Physics in the Delaware Valley Science Fair held in April 2006 along with a scholarship to attend the University of Science in Philadelphia.

Dr. Xue Feng, a Ph. D. graduate, has landed her first job. Currently she is working as Environmental and Process Control Analyst at Union Packaging, LLC in Philadelphia.

Xue Feng, leader of our Carbon group, defended her dissertation in December.
“Application of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes In Environmental Engineering: Adsorption and Desorption of Environmentally Relevant Species Studied by Infrared Spectroscopy and Temperature Programmed Desorption”
Dr. Feng, who was co-advised by Professor Radisav Vidic, was awarded a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Her work resulted in a number of publications. A few more are in preparation.

New high power, tunable Femtosecond laser installed.
We have improved the capability of our optics group by installing high power femtosecond laser (Integra-E) and a commercial Optical Parametric Amplifier (OPA). The Integra-E from Quantronix delivers 3.5mJ at 1 kHz. The TOPAS produces Signal(S)+Idler(I) in the range of 1.1-2.6um with peak at 1.5μm having 900mW power. S-I Difference Frequency Generation (DFG) produces mid-IR pulses ranging from 2.7-15um with peak energy at 3.4um having 40uJ .
