Photo by Chris Hauer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Emerging infectious diseases pose an increasing global threat to wildlife species in several taxa.\u00a0 Our lab has focused extensively on white-nose syndrome, a devastating disease of hibernating bats caused by an invasive fungal pathogen.\u00a0 This disease has killed millions of bats, reducing their beneficial roles in insect regulation, pest control, and the maintenance of rare cave communities.\u00a0 We are currently studying the impacts of white-nose syndrome on regional populations of bats, the ecological and behavioral responses of bats to the disease, and the identification of novel and effective means to manage the pathogen and protect wild bats from the worst effects of the disease.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ecological restoration within working landscapes<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_637\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/bjsewall\/files\/2010\/12\/Rx-Fire-2-Fort-Indiantown-Gap_low_res.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-637\" class=\"size-full wp-image-637\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/bjsewall\/files\/2010\/12\/Rx-Fire-2-Fort-Indiantown-Gap_low_res.jpg\" alt=\"Prescribed fire for land management at Fort Indiantown Gap. Photo courtesy of Wildlife Program, Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania National Guard<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Working landscapes &#8211; land areas for which the primary purpose is not conservation &#8211; represent an underutilized resource for conserving biodiversity.\u00a0 Our lab is conducting applied ecology research to evaluate means to enhance the conservation value of working landscapes.\u00a0 Current projects focus on facilitating the recovery of at-risk species and ecosystems on military training areas through prescribed fire, grassland management, sylvicultural treatments, and other land management activities.\u00a0 Our current studies focus on understanding the ecological impacts of military training and management activities on forest and prairie ecosystems and developing strategies for maintaining ecosystem services and biodiversity within the context of an active program of military training activities.<\/p>\n<p><em>Species interactions and biodiversity<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_139\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/bjsewall\/files\/2010\/12\/Eulemur_sanfordi_Ficus_grevei.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-139\" class=\"wp-image-139 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/bjsewall\/files\/2010\/12\/Eulemur_sanfordi_Ficus_grevei.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A male Sanford&#8217;s lemur (<em>Eulemur sanfordi<\/em>) foraging on a fig (<em>Ficus grevei<\/em>) tree in Madagascar. Photo by Brent Sewall.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Species commonly interact with each other to obtain needed resources (like energy, nutrients, or shelter) or services (like protection, pollination, or seed dispersal).\u00a0 Most organisms would not survive &#8211; and most communities would not long persist &#8211; without these interactions.\u00a0 Our lab investigates in-depth how species interactions shape biodiversity patterns.\u00a0 Our work examines the profound effects that interactions among pairs or networks of species have on the structure and dynamics of ecological communities.\u00a0 Current projects especially emphasize pollination, seed dispersal, and host-pathogen interaction types.<\/p>\n<p><em>Species invasions<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_969\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/bjsewall\/files\/2021\/07\/SLF-team-20210707_035-resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-969\" class=\"size-full wp-image-969\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/bjsewall\/files\/2021\/07\/SLF-team-20210707_035-resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Field crew studying effects of the invasive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) on native forest plants<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A newly invasive insect pest known as the spotted lanternfly (<em>Lycorma delicatula<\/em>) poses an important, emerging threat to forest habitats in Pennsylvania.\u00a0 The spotted lanternfly (SLF) is a planthopper native to northern China but was recorded for the first time in the Americas in southeastern Pennsylvania in 2014, suggesting a recent human-mediated introduction.\u00a0 Since then, it has spread across much of Pennsylvania and to neighboring states.\u00a0\u00a0 The SLF is of particular concern as it has the potential to reach exceptionally high abundances within invaded landscapes. and could cause harm to a wide variety of tree, shrub and vine species.\u00a0 Much remains unknown, however, about these potential impacts.\u00a0 We are undertaking a collaborative study at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ambler.temple.edu\/fieldstation\">Temple Ambler Field Station<\/a> to explore impacts of the SLF on some of Pennsylvania&#8217;s native plants.<\/p>\n<p><em>Conservation planning in the tropics<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_150\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/bjsewall\/files\/2010\/12\/Ouallah-Mirereni.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150\" class=\"size-full wp-image-150 \" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/bjsewall\/files\/2010\/12\/Ouallah-Mirereni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The village of Ouallah-Mirereni, Moheli, Union of the Comoros.
