Clinical Immersion

BioDesign Summer Clinical Immersion Internship

Who should apply?

This program aims to support historically underserved students with limited opportunities. However, all students may apply. To apply, applicants must be a rising junior or senior, be enrolled as an engineering student, and have a minimum overall GPA of 2.8. You should have an interest in innovating and design within the healthcare/medical sphere.

What is a Clinical Immersion?

Spend time during a 7-week period to shadow and talk to clinicians, attend grand rounds and other academic activities. Discover first-hand current unmet clinical needs and learn to think about how engineers can provide and design solutions to these problems in a variety of clinical disciplines!

Where will this experience take place?

You will spend 6 weeks in the clinic with 4 days/week in the clinic and 1 day/week for debrief in Bioengineering. You may have an option to spend 1 additional week at DSM (a local biomaterials company) working with engineers. You will spend the last week finalizing proposals and preparing a poster for the COE summer poster symposium regarding your work during the immersion. The symposium is tentatively scheduled for July 23, 2020.

When is the Clinical Immersion offered?

Internship time frame: June 8 – July 23, 2020

You may be required to complete some safety and HIPAA training which must be done prior to the start date of the program.

This is a full-time internship opportunity in that you will be working 40hrs/week for the duration of the internship for a sum of $2,400 for 7 weeks.

Why should you apply?

This internship offers students an opportunity to work with physicians, residents, and medical students to discover unmet clinical needs that can be addressed using engineering solutions! These ideas can be developed into senior design projects that will have real impact on health care and treatment. You will also spend time during this immersion at a local bioengineering industrial facility to learn how engineering idea become products and go to market.

On-line applications will be due March 31, 2020.
