Martin Luther King Online Lesson
Introduction from Lorraine Ritacco Shaw, Assistant Director for Curriculum and Instruction
Welcome PDPI participants! I am so excited to be working with you and look forward to meeting you in January.
You will be arriving just in time for Martin Luther King (MLK) Day on Monday, January 15. On that day, you will visit the National Constitution Center, which will be hosting events to commemorate Dr. King. Many visitors to the United States are familiar with Martin Luther King but may not be aware of the holiday dedicated to his legacy or the significant details of his life and contributions.
This online lesson will prepare you for your visit and offer an inside look at how Americans observe MLK day. The objectives for this lesson are to present an overview of the life of Martin Luther King and civil rights leader Rosa Parks; introduce music influenced by civil rights leaders and events; practice listening comprehension through videos about MLK day; and use an online discussion board to reflect on these topics in preparation for the MLK day visits.
I hope you enjoy this lesson!

You can certainly choose to work at your own pace; if you need to finish the units over a period of days, that is fine. The total time to complete all of the units should be around 1 hour and 40 minutes, depending on reading and reflection time.
