As my favorite Author Anthony Robbins would say, “Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.” Throughout life, I was lost and searching to find what was in my best interests. However, as a young man, I was grateful enough to find enlightenment through my experiences. Some say it was a single instance that changed their life, but not for me. There were multiple situations where Therapeutic Recreation was calling out to me, but the one I hold dearest was in 2005. At a young age my brother was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was stationed at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The only time I was able to see my brother was when he was playing in the hospital game room. I vividly remember watching him and the other patients playing board games, foosball, and other activities during their leisure time. The most beautiful thing brought to my attention was seeing how happy they were playing with each other in that room. The world that they were living in at that moment of leisure was their world of happiness. For this reason, it came to me I wanted to grow in Therapeutic Recreation to give back to people, so that they can find happiness in their times of struggle.
Professionally, I hope to work with adolescent in developmental and supportive play. I believe that leisure can help with coping, mastery, self-expression, creativity, achievement and learning, and is vital to a child’s optimal growth and development. By developing these great aspects that everyone needs in life, a child can become more functional in everyday life. My dream is to work in a children’s hospital to help facilitate growth and development in their lives.
My goals everyday are to grow as a person. Whether that be spiritually, physically or psychologically to help better myself towards other people in life. In addition, through my plan of education I will develop great skills as a professional to achieve my goals to be the best I can be. In a few years, I plan to be an experienced, passionate professional that can give back to those in need.
