General Update:

Sorry there haven’t been many updates for the past week.  I’ve basically been going through all of the *.C files in montecarlo/optical/run4/10kg and annotating them.  However, I have made some significant changes to the code, which seem to be adjusting the S2 distribution in the direction we want.

Optical MC:

  1. I’ve been going through all the *.C files in montecarlo/optical/run4/10kg and annotating them
  2. I’ve finished “MakeFile”, “material.C”, “qe_ham.h”, “tpb.h”, and “tpb_vm2000_reflectivity.h”
  3. I’m currently working on annotating “main_all.C”, though it’s a lot to work through (~1000 lines)
  4. After that, I only have “geometry.dat” and “read_geant4.C”

Light Distribution Problem:

  1. In Alfredo’s optical MC, there were a few formulae which didn’t seem quite right.
  2. In “material.C” (annotated version printed below), there are some incorrect linear interpolations between data points
  3. For one of these, I fixed the interpolation
  4. For another, which didn’t go to zero at the endpoints, I replaced the interpolation with a function which modeled the data to an R^2 value of > 0.99
  5. These will be described in more detail in tomorrow’s weekly report

General Update:

“Literature” is no longer a featured category.  I’ve left all of my previous notes on this site, but I’ve also copied them over to https://sites.temple.edu/awwthesis/, where they are much more organized and easily accessible.  I’ve also been running a good deal of optical MC trials…  There are more going as of this writing which will be added to tomorrow’s entry.  Until then, I’ll keep reading Ben’s thesis.

Optical MC:

  1. All 1000 events, 220eV runs (No significant change in S2 or S1 unless otherwise noted)
  2. run 000 – Control, nothing changed
  3. run 001 – Ar index of refraction == 1.000
  4. run 002 – LAr index of refraction == 1.000
  5. run 003 – LAr & Ar indices of refraction == 1.000 (dilutes S2 signal, no other effects)
  6. run 004 – wavelength shifter turned off
  7. run 005 – PMTPB hit efficiency turned down to 0.000
  8. run 006 – PMTQRZ hit efficiency turned down to 0.000
  9. run 007 – PMTPB & PMTQRZ hit efficiency turned down to 0.000 from 0.20
  10. run 008 – return inverse of LAr dielectric constant
  11. run 009 – return inverse of Ar dielectric constant
  12. run 010 – return inverse of both dielectric constants
  13. run 011 – LAr ref index set to 0.000 (destroyed the S1 signal, S2 signal is a little smaller and less concentrated)
  14. run 012 – LAr ref index set to -1.000 (destroyed the S1 signal, S2 signal is much more concentrated on max channels, S1 signal is significantly less concentrated on other channels)
  15. run 013 – MylarTPB reflective power and PMTPB reflective power set to 0.000
  16. run 014 – PTFE reflective power set to 0.000
  17. run 015 – MylarTPB, PMTPB, and PTFE reflective powers all set to 0.000

General Update:

Seeing as how the “literature” section is already beginning to get a little out of hand and disorganized, I’ve decided to make a companion site to this one, dedicated to books, articles, etc. that I plan on citing in my thesis (or at least think may be useful later).  I’m going to remove all the old “literature” posts from here over the next few days and hopefully organize them a little better at https://sites.temple.edu/awwthesis/.  In addition to that, today I’ve started reading Ben Loer’s thesis, and will have many more notes to add over the next week.

More WARP notes below the break.  I also met with Dr. Martoff today and discussed what parameters I should be focusing on for the optical MC, I’ll be making drastic changes to optical parameters for the next few runs to see if I can get the light distributions to make a dramatic change.

General Update:

I’ve spent most of my time over the past week reading Luca’s thesis (and most of the workday today typing the following notes I took from it), so unfortunately I won’t have much to report tomorrow.  I have some preliminary (probably very incorrect) ideas about how to adjust the S2 light in the optical MC runs, and Dr. Martoff and I have started working on a new project–boiling argon inside a cryostat.  See below the break for details and literature notes!

Coding:

  1. Today, I finished the C++ Tutorials I’ve been working on for the past two months (they came in handy for the next items…)
  2. I also finished writing a DAQROOT macro which does the following:
    It loads two “*out.root” files, based on input from the user
    It extracts the relevant histograms from these *.root files (which have already been run through my FIRST macro
    It overlays matching sets of histograms, adjusting scales based on which histogram runs through larger values
    It dynamically names the output files (based on the user input from above) and automatically saves the ROOT canvasses as *.gifs
  3. Thus, the process for actually creating these overlaid histograms goes as follows:
    Adjust some parameters in main_all.C, “make” the directory to compile
    Run “MC10kg” to get initial *.root MC data files
    Run “extractS1S2.C” to extract S1 and S2 distribution from initial *.root file and save these in *out.root file
    Initialize DAQROOT, load “compare.C”, run with the following syntax:
    $ compare(“001”, “002”)
    …where “001” and “002}” are arbitrary run numbers to be overlaid
  4. The macros I wrote are below the break (they’re in the process of being cleaned up and polished a bit)

Coding:

  1. Ran run001.root through run009.root through my macro (makes S1/S2 histograms)
  2. Runs 001-005 have no parameters changed
  3. Runs 006-010 have “Alfredo’s quenching factor” adjusted from 0.8 to 0.7, 0.6, 0.5, 0.4, 0.3
  4. Cleared root files off of blackhole/home/ directory, per Alfredo’s request (they ate up a lot of space)
  5. Still working on second ROOT macro, which will overlay pre-created histograms
  6. Made a lot of progress on C++ Tutorials (currently on the final chapter, #17)

Optical MC / ROOT:

  1. It took me a while, but today I figured out how to extract the S1 data–in addition to the S2 data–from my MC runs.
  2. I’m now able to print the eight relevant histograms for each run [S1/S2][ch0max/ch1max][ch0/ch1]
  3. My next step is to be able to overlay multiple histograms with ROOT, so I can easily compare runs to each other
  4. The actual data *.root file also has a slightly different ROOT Tree hierarchy, so I need to adjust my macro for that
  5. The MC is also running another 5 rounds with different “elike_quenching” values: 0.9, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3
  6. The above are basically just practice, to get used to running these macros and everything
  7. “TO DO” list has been updated, reflecting the advances mentioned above
