Dr. Si Qin, the leading author of the paper “Generalized Coprime Array Configurations for Direction-of-Arrival Estimation” published in the March 2015 issues of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, has been selected for the 2018 IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award.
Si was a PhD student at Villanova University when the paper was submitted. The paper was coauthored with Si’s advisor, Dr. Yimin D. Zhang, and co-advisor, Dr. Moeness G. Amin.
This award-winning paper has advanced the state-of-art in sparse array design and provides a leap forward contribution to the problem of direction-of-arrival estimation using structured sparse arrays. This is achieved through fundamental and powerful operations that aim at coprime array generalization. The new resulting structures offer significantly higher number of spatial autocorrelation lags than the original coprime structure and are able to resolve more sources with improved accuracy. The paper derives analytical expressions of the corresponding co-array aperture, the achievable number of unique lags, and the maximum number of consecutive lags for quantitative evaluation, comparison, and optimal design.
This paper has been cited more than 210 times since its publication. It was frequently listed as a “Hot Paper” and “Highly Cited Paper” by Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science.
According to IEEE Signal Processing Society, the Young Author Best Paper Award honors the author(s) of an especially meritorious paper dealing with a subject related to the Society’s technical scope and appearing in one of the Society’s solely owned transactions (including the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing) or the Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing and who, upon the date of submission of the paper, is less than 30 years of age. Eligibility is based on a three-year window. Judging shall be on the basis of general quality, originality, subject matter, and timeliness. Up to six Young Author Best Paper Awards may be presented annually.
The award will be presented at the Society’s Awards Ceremony to be held during the 2019 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) in Brighton, U.K. in May 2019.
