It’s hard to believe my program is nearing its end and that I’m beginning work on my MA project. In addition to my studies, I work full-time as a Communications Specialist at Comcast, a Fortune 35 media and technology company. In my role, I’ve observed clear differences in how Black women navigate professional spaces compared to others. My project may take the form of a documentary exploring how Black women experience Eurocentric beauty standards and code-switching in corporate America. I will interview women who have faced these pressures and connect their stories to theoretical frameworks like Charles Horton Cooley’s “looking glass self” and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality as it relates to Black feminism. I look forward to exploring new concepts that connect to this project in the thesis paper that will accompany the documentary.
I searched for Christina Brown’s documentary that she completed in the last cohort of this program because I believe our projects could be similar in format. While I listed above that my project may be a documentary, it could also be a podcast. While I couldn’t find Christina’s project to properly site, I did see Matt Kasznel’s (2018) podcast documentary. This project influenced me to upload the audio from my video so it could also serve as an audio podcast on streaming platforms. While Kasznel’s project was on sports, I could follow a similar flow of including background music throughout, sound effects, and excerpts from interviews.
