PhD Students

Po-Cheng Yu – 5th Year

Po-Cheng Yu obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and Resource Conservation in 2012 at the National Taiwan University in Taipei University. He then obtained his Master of Science degree in Forestry in 2014 in a  Biomaterial Chemistry and Modifications Lab at the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan. Po-Cheng then worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Molecular Biology in 2016 at Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan.

Po-Cheng joined the Andrade Lab in 2016 and currently works on novel N-sulfinyl imine and N-sulfinylmetallodienamine methodology including the Domino Michael/Mannich reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, and Vinylogous Aldol reaction, which are utilized toward the synthesis of complex natural products such as (+)-ibogamine.

At Temple, Po-Cheng completed his Literature Seminar in 2018, entitled “Photoredox Activation of CO2 for Amino Acid Synthesis in Flow.” Po-Cheng completed his Original Research Proposal in 2019, entitled “Oxidative Coupling of N-Sulfinyl Enamine Derivatives and Synthesis of (+)-Chimonanthine.” Outside of the lab, Po-Cheng is completing his goal of visiting every major league baseball stadium in the country.

Alex Gardner – 4th Year

Alex Gardner obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy with a Mathematics minor in 2017 from the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Alex joined the Andrade Lab in 2017 and currently works on the semi-synthesis of bis-indole alkaloids (–)-conophylline and (–)-conophyllidine as anti-cancer leads and mono-terpene indole alkaloids as anti-Alzheimer’s leads through chemical synthesis and enzymatic biotransformations. Alex also works on C-H activation using iridium-catalyzed borylation methodology to functionalize indole and indoline cores of complex natural products.

At Temple, Alex completed his Literature Seminar in 2018, entitled “Transition Metal-Catalyzed C6 C-H Functionalization of Indoles.” Alex completed his Original Research Proposal in 2019, entitled “Achieving Full Indole Regiocontrol: Silane-Directed Iridium-Catalyzed Meta-Borylation and Applications in Complex Natural Product Synthesis.” Alex also obtained a Certificate for Teaching Chemistry in Higher Education through the Center for the Advancement of Teaching in 2018. Outside of the lab, Alex enjoys watching countless amounts of reality television.

Jinfeng Kang – 3rd Year

Jinfeng Kang obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 2012 from Zhengzhou University in Zhengzou, China. He then obtained his Master of Science degree in Organic Chemistry in 2015 from Zhengzhou University in Zhengzhou, China. Jinfeng then worked from 2015 – 2017 as a Process Chemist at STA Pharmaceutical, a WuXi AppTec Company, in China and from 2017 – 2018 as a Synthetic Chemist at Sundai Meditech in China. Jinfeng joined the Andrade Lab in 2018 and currently works on the semi-synthesis of (–)-taberhanine and other multi-oxidized mono-terpene indole alkaloid derivatives. He also works on novel cyanation reactions to optimize the coupling step of the semi-synthesis of bis-indole alkaloids.

At Temple, Jinfeng completed his Literature Seminar in 2020, entitled “Asymmetric Functionalization of sp3 C-H Bonds via Copper Catalyzed Radical Relay.” Outside of the lab, Jinfeng enjoys playing video games.

Anupam Karmakar – 2nd Year

Anupam Karmakar obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 2016 from the University of Burdwan in West Bengal, India. He then obtained his Master of Science degree in Chemistry in 2018 from the Indian Institute of Technology in West Bengal, India. Anupam joined the Andrade Lab in 2018 and currently works on a novel N-sulfinylmetallodienamine α-oxidation methodology with high yield and diastereoselectivity. He also works on the electrophilic amination of N-sulfinylmetallodienamines.

At Temple, Anupam completed his Literature Seminar in 2020, entitled “A Radical Approach to the Copper Oxidative Addition Problem: Trifluoromethylation of Bromoarenes.” Outside of the lab, Anupam enjoys listening to music and playing the guitar.

Femil Shajan – 1st Year

Femil Shajan obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 2016 from the University of Calicut in Kerala, India. He then obtained his Master of Science degree in Chemistry in 2018 from Pune University in Pune, India.

Femil joined the Andrade Lab in 2019 and currently works on novel N-sulfinyl imine and N-sulfinylmetallodienamine methodology including the Domino Michael/Michael reactions and α-oxidation reactions. Outside of the lab, Femil enjoys watching movies.

Undergraduate Students

Micah Morton – Junior

Micah Morton graduated from Moon Area High School in 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is currently working toward earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 2022.

Micah joined the Andrade Lab in 2019 and currently works on the analog development of the potent anti-cancer bis-indole alkaloid (–)-melodinine K through chemical synthesis and enzymatic biotransformations.

At Temple, Micah is a Presidential Scholar, Science Scholar, and member of the Honors Program. Outside of the lab, Micah enjoys trying new foods and baking.
