Sam Altman Sets the Stage: His Proposed “Three Laws of AI”

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI (the creator of ChatGPT), had recently introduced laws to govern the use of artificial intelligence. These laws provide a vision into the future of AI that rely on three observations: “intelligence scaling with resources, decreasing usage costs, and super-exponential socioeconomic value growth”. Intelligence scaling with resources refers t o Altman’s observation that the intelligence of AI increases when resources are allocated to its development. For Altman, as more resources are devoted to AI, the more intelligent it becomes. Secondly, decreasing usage costs refers to the idea that AI systems are becoming more affordable to implement. A lower cost of implementation, according to Altman, means that AI systems can be made more accessible. Lastly, super-exponential socioeconomic value growth refers to Altman’s vision that AI can serve as a catalyst for socioeconomic development. For Altman, AI will replicate human capabilities, allowing society to adapt and configure into a new society. These rules help signify a more gradual shift to an AI-based society, rather than an abrupt one.
