Whitehead<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Guest<\/strong>: Kevin Delaney<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chairperson Greg McKinney called the meeting to order at 2:05 pm.\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Minutes of the General Assembly Meeting<\/strong> of November 9, 2004 were approved.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Report from Jonathan LeBreton<\/strong>:\n<ol>\n<li>Jonathan predicts that there will be a lot of movement forward once Larry Alford arrives \u2013 there\u00a0is a lot to do in the way of strategic planning, including refining those plans we have already worked on. \u00a0Those separate plans need to be formed into a cohesive document.<\/li>\n<li>The E-Resources Librarian position has been posted. \u00a0The Search Committee\u2019s members are\u00a0Carole Bell (Chair), Phil D\u2019Andrea, Frank Immler, Barbara Kuchan, Molly Larkin, and Rick Lezenby.<\/li>\n<li>Jonathan has been compiling a set of updated procedures for searches for use by search\u00a0committees and administrative staff, e.g., incorporating mechanical changes in Human Resources\u00a0processes. \u00a0Rick Lezenby, Chair of the Selection and Appointment Committee, had expressed interest in\u00a0such procedures and Jonathan will forward to him for discussion and clarification.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>PARA Update<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Mark Darby, as Chair of PARA reminded the assembly that it is promotion season. \u00a0He will send\u00a0out an e-mail reminder for applications along with deadlines.<\/li>\n<li>Mark also reminded members that contract renewals for newly hired librarians are due at the\u00a0end of February.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contract Negotiation<\/strong>:\n<ol>\n<li>Mark Darby reported on the state of contract negotiations between TAUP and the University. \u00a0TAUP agreed to a contract extension to last through February 15th. \u00a0Most points being negotiated are of\u00a0interest to faculty: promotion and tenure standards and procedures, study leaves, contract renewal for\u00a0Dean\u2019s Appointments, and salary and benefits. \u00a0The process is still in informal negotiation.<\/li>\n<li>Mark noted points of interest to librarians: \u00a0the administration decided to extend the period of\u00a0time before regular appointment is attained to seven years (4 one-year contracts and 1 two-year contract). \u00a0Mark asked that members inform them of their opinions about this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Old Business<\/strong>: \u00a0There was no old business to discuss.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New Business<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0There was no new business to discuss<\/li>\n<li><strong>Forum<\/strong>: \u00a0\u00a0Kevin Delaney of the Sociology Department spoke about his book Public Dollars, Private Stadiums. \u00a0The development of downtown stadiums does not really help the area in which they are built. \u00a0Major league\u00a0football generally only fills the stadium ten times per year while baseball holds about eighty-five games a\u00a0year. \u00a0Stadiums tend to close down local business and create a \u201cgame day\u201d economic zone that caters to\u00a0those going to the games. \u00a0Arenas, on the other hand, are indoor spaces that can be used for other events\u00a0and, thus, are more able to pay for themselves.\u00a0Dr. Delaney also spoke about his philosophy of teaching and how to engage students in the\u00a0learning process. \u00a0He believes in \u201cteaching from the inside out\u201d \u2013 that relating to students first then\u00a0instructing them works well. \u00a0High context teaching is better than abstract teaching.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The meeting was adjourned at 2:50 PM.<\/p>\n<div>Submitted by<\/div>\n<div>Carol Brigham<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Academic Assembly of Librarians\u00a0 General Assembly Meeting\u00a0 Paley Library Lecture Hall\u00a0 January 11, 2005\u00a0 2:00 PM\u00a0 Present: D.
