

{"id":188,"date":"2012-09-11T11:21:03","date_gmt":"2012-09-11T15:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/academicassembly\/?p=188"},"modified":"2016-07-19T11:21:44","modified_gmt":"2016-07-19T15:21:44","slug":"september-11-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/academicassembly\/2012\/09\/11\/september-11-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"September 11, 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong>ACADEMIC ASSEMBLY OF LIBRARIANS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>TUESDAY, September 11, 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>2:00PM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>PALEY LIBRARY, LECTURE HALL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>MINUTES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Attending: Jim Bongiovanni (Chair), Krystal Lewis (Vice-chair), Brian Boling (Recorder), Carla Cunningham, Molly Larkin, Jonathan Lebreton, Cynthia Gingrich, Doreva Belfiore, Penelope Myers, Delphine Khanna, Brian Schoolar, Kristina DeVoe, Margery Sly, Steven Bell, Adam Shambaugh, Mark Darby, Fred Rowland, Carol Lang (ex-officio)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meeting called to order at 2:05 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Approval of minutes from the Sep 2011, Nov 2011, Jan 2012 and March 2012 AAL GA meetings (KML)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in\">a.\u00a0 The outstanding minutes from Sept 2011, Nov 2011, Jan 2012, and March<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2012 were approved.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"2\">Remarks by the Interim Dean of Libraries (CL)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in\">a.\u00a0 New faculty reception \u2013\u00a0 Dean Lang mentioned that the annual reception for new faculty would be held that evening.\u00a0 Lauri Fennell will attend.\u00a0 Doreva will be invited next year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in\">b.\u00a0 Hiring and vacancies \u2013 The search for Coordinator of Technical Services for SCRC will wrap up soon.\u00a0 Final interviews were held the preceding week for the African American Studies\/Government Information Reference Librarian position.\u00a0 Searches for Access Services Librarian, Coordinator of Public Services for SCRC, and Bibliographic Assistant in Access Services should post shortly. \u00a0Two other exceptions on the horizon will create Web Services and Digital Services Librarian positions in DLI.\u00a0 Permission will be sought to replace Susan LaValley in Health Sciences and to fill at least one of the two Science Librarian vacancies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: .5in\">c.\u00a0 Dr. Dai \u2013 Dean Lang hopes that the new interim Provost Dr. Hai-Lung Dai will attend the All Staff Meeting on September 25<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 He has been interested in the many new things he\u2019s learning about the library.\u00a0 In their meeting on September 12, the Dean and Provost will discuss ARL rankings and library statistics, as well as the PARA process.\u00a0 Dean Lang also hopes to discuss additional vacancies at the library and the possibility of emeritus status for librarians.\u00a0 David Murray and Richie Holland have worked together on documentation regarding the question of emeritus status.\u00a0 Dr. Dai has been engaged in the process of planning for the new library and has added that subject to the meeting\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li value=\"3\">Vote on Proposed By-Laws Revisions\n<ol>\n<li>Incorporating HSL and Law librarians into AAL\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 This change was uncontroversial, though there continued to be discussion of whether the language about librarians with advanced degrees in librarianship was a tautology.\u00a0 Dean Lang mentioned that some library B.A.\u2019s have Masters of Library Science degrees, but are not in librarian positions with librarian-specific duties.<\/li>\n<li>PARA, further clarifying who can vote and serve on committees involving bargaining-unit members\u00a0 &#8212; Fred Rowland expressed concerns that the language in this section was unclear, though he admitted that the TAUP agreement, as a legal contract, would trump the AAL bylaws if any conflict were to arise.\u00a0 Other members felt that the language was clear in its intent (ensuring that HSL and Law librarians could not serve on PARA, Merit, or Selection &amp;
