Welcome to my professional web site.
My research focuses on the development and testing of instructional strategies and materials that facilitate critical thinking about scientific topics. Currently, I am principal investigator of a NSF-funded project that is examining students’ scientific thinking when confronted with controversial and/or complex Earth and space science topics, such as climate change and fracking. My research appears in scholarly and practitioner journals such as Educational Psychologist, Learning and Instruction, International Journal of Science Education, The Science Teacher, Discourse Processes, Research in Science Teaching, Instructional Science, and The Earth Scientist.
I am also a licensed physical science and mathematics teacher, with a variety of classroom, professional development, and education and public outreach experience.
